Vincent and Aeris have an unusual Conversation (Drabble)

This is an idea that I've wanted to explore ever since I saw the first DC picture of Lucrecia. Set some time after you get Vincent, before Aeris dies, obviously enough. No, I have not pointlessly resurrected her for the purposes of this fic. Well, that's me done. Enjoy!

… … …

"Um, Mr Vincent, can I ask you a question?"

Aeris had been summoning up the courage to talk to the red-cloaked man for the last half hour. They were sitting alone in the plains near the chocobo farm, waiting for the rest of AVALANCHE to get back from training up against the Midgar Zolom. Vincent had said he didn't need to train, and Aeris hadn't really wanted to fight the great big snake thing, so she'd ended up sitting next to him in uncomfortable silence.

"If you must," Vincent replied, staring into the distance. Aeris giggled, disguising her annoyance, and pressed on.

"Well… I was wondering…" She shuffled a bit closer to him. "Um, why does your hair grow like that?"

Vincent gave her a blank look that might have signalled boredom, confusion, or any number of other emotions. "Forgive me. I do not understand your meaning."

Aeris giggled, her stock reaction to make others feel at ease and conceal her own embarrassment. "Your hair! It's all flat, but spiky on top, and I was just wondering…" she trailed off as the ghost of a smirk crossed Vincent's face.

"You are hardly one to talk, Miss Gainsborough."

"Ooh!" Aeris folded her arms. "And what's THAT supposed to mean?"

"I think you know." Vincent made a sound that was almost a chuckle. "That fringe, for example…"

Aeris shrugged. "It's a Cetra thing. Mom was the same. We all have pretty and unusual hair!" She paused, thinking. "Actually, maybe Sephiroth is slightly Cetra, somehow. I suppose it would explain his fr-" she broke off as Vincent shook his head.

"Sephiroth inherited his fringe," Vincent murmured, gazing into space. "Lucrecia, beautiful Lucrecia, passed on her remarkable hair. People used to tease her about her fringe, but I always thought it was beautiful… beautiful…" he trailed off.

"Um…" Aeris chewed on the end of her thumb, deep in thought. "So… do you think Sephiroth would be a brunette, if he hadn't been… um…"

"Possibly," said Vincent.

"That's… strange…" Aeris sighed. "I really can't picture him any other way…"

"He looks like his mother. Excuse me." Vincent stood up. "I'll see you later. I want to be on my own."

Hehehe… bet you're confused which genre this is… guess it's humour/angst… :P:P:P Let's just say 'dark humour'.
