"I don't think," Rosencrantz said, then paused. "I don't think that's a legal move. But then, I could be wrong…"

Guildenstern sighed and moved the chess piece back to its original square. "I'll just move something else."

That seemed like the sensible thing to do, since neither of them were quite sure of the rules, so Rosencrantz merely nodded and reached out to move one of his pawns. Collectively, there were two things they knew about the game of chess: he had chosen to move only the white pieces and Guildenstern only the black, which took care of the first thing they knew; and secondly, pawns could only make the simple move of one square at a time.
