One for the Road: Closing Thoughts
We've come a long way, these stories and me, and all of you who've read them and put up with my author's notes. But this is the end, so you've got one more to read.
It's been just six months shy of three years since I put up the beginning of Brain Damage. I was a freshman in high school when I started writing it, and it's grown up with me since then. My humor hasn't changed much, as the jokes are still really dark and Firebats were dying right up into the final chapters, but I think the characters matured a little.
Over time, I figured out how to work those characters. For instance, I was always sure that Jim needed to be put through hell as much as possible, so I had him shot, stabbed, brain burned, electrocuted, and just beat up as often as I could. Needless to say, I think he got a happier ending then he could have.
Nick always needed to seem a little crazy, and though there were times where that slipped, I think the end to his plotline cemented his insanity enough.
Nanius seems quite dead, but who knows? Protoss always seem particularly resistant to death. In all honesty, he'll probably end up in The Confederate at some point. Sue me, but I want my favorite characters back in the same story. Nanius and Jax for the win.
Katsuragi and Jim seem to have made a baby, and it seems like the rest of the guys are still running around in the Shogoki. I think it's a decent ending, but that's up to you.
Speaking of you, you who read all these years and stuck with my lazy ass till the end, I thank you. cHr0n0sPh3r3 for being a constant voice that just said 'YES!' to everything; general andrew for commenting on Nick in every chapter, because that totally ruled; n1, for giving ideas and generally kicking ass; Saritenite, I hope the ending was epic enough for you; Kryptn, for never reviewing but always PMing; and everyone else I didn't mention.
Oh, and you, Nederbird. The writer's reader. The most intelligent person I've ever met on the internet. I've told you this before, but thank you, specifically to you, because every review you ever wrote made me want to write more, and your comments were always spot-on and insightful. If I was lazy, you caught on, and if I worked my ass off, you gave a 'good job'. Thank you so very much.
At the very end of the epilogue, we see the first scene from Brain Damage again. Writing it, I realized just how much I loved these characters to begin with, and how much I want to write more with them.
But I won't, because I think this is the best place to leave them. Doing more would be cheap, but I'm not done with the StarCraft universe. Not by a long shot.
Now we're at the end of the note, and you know what that means. This is the last time I'm going to ask it, and there has never been a better time to come out of hiding and answer the call. So, can you give me your closing thoughts?
