THE SURPRISE

"Jaime, what is it you needed to talk with me about?" Carter asked. He offered her a seat on his couch. She sighed and reached into her purse. She handed him a plastic bag with something inside. Carter looked at it and exhaled deeply. "Who's the father?"

"I don't know, probably won't ever know. As soon as I tell Scott, he'll marry me within the week, act like it was the plan all along, but…if it's someone else's, then…I can't ever tell anyone."

"Why are you telling me?"

"Because…I can't go undercover and be pregnant. It's dangerous enough without extra baggage."

"I respect your honesty, but who is going to replace you?"

"My sister."

"You didn't tell me about a sister."

"A twin actually, Jasmine," Jaime whispered. "Jasmine Castallanos to be exact, married into a Latino gang, divorced, never changed her name. She'll help bust the newest set of gangs you talked about. The most I can do it get her in here and help you keep watch on everything."

"What am I going to tell Ty and Dean? That you've had a change of heart?"

"Tell them…I left town. I can be that fly on the wall, like everyone's always wanted to be at work," she smirked. Carter sighed.

"I want to help you more than this."

"Can you help me keep it a secret? I won't tell anyone other than you until I get everything figured out, maybe even get a paternity test."

"Why not marry Scott, get out now while you can?"

"Because…you've grown on me, Carter. This whole thing has: going out into the big, bad world of crime and bringing them down from the inside, tackling my past one drug dealer at a time. It's the best thing that's ever happened to me."

"Well…what are you going to do short-term?"

"I'm leaving town for tonight, coming back tomorrow, and I'll be ready to enter my secret life."

"And how are you going to do that?"

"Gain about fifty pounds, which will hide the baby, then lose it after they all figure it out."

"I don't like that."

"Neither do I. Stretch marks don't just disappear. But…what can I do?" she sighed. She stood and accepted the test back. "You know, you are the first guy I could say 'I'm pregnant' to and know that I won't get chewed out."

"You just can't hear me," Carter smirked. He led Jaime to the door and watched her leave through the window. He sighed and got back to his television, knowing that things would never be the same.

*************************************************************************************

"Push!"

"AHHHH!" Jaime screamed. Carter was beside her as the baby was born, crying hysterically.

"It's a girl!"

Jaime began to cry as the baby was brought to her. Carter looked to her and smiled. The two held the baby between them, but suddenly Carter's phone rang. He took it outside as Jaime looked to the birth certificate being put towards her. The baby would be Elizabeth Alexandra. Her father…still unknown, but…judging by the eyes that had a hint of mischief, it was Dean's, but the seriousness meant that she could be Carter's. Luckily, Scott was out of the picture before she started showing, and Carter kept his secrets. Now, if only Jasmine could keep her secret long enough to figure out what to do.

"Here are the tests."

"Thanks," Carter nodded, taking off his sunglasses and putting on his reading glasses. He scanned the page for the summary of the results. He smirked and passed them to Jaime. "I knew something was going on between you two."

"How did you know?"

"You don't have enough shoes, Jaime," Carter smirked. Elizabeth began to cry as Jaime scoffed then followed him back to the car. It would be a long drive.
