A/N: So I had this idea for a while, and I just couldn't help myself, so I had to write it down, and it evolved into this. I strongly dislike the MelloxNear pairing, but I do enjoy seeing them get along – sort of. So I present this little drabble. This takes place just after Mello turns to leave the SPK after retrieving his picture, but before the "waiting at the finish line" bit. Enjoy.
Near continued his stacking, one finger curled in his hair, and added calmly, "Before you leave, Mello, I have something else to give you."
Mello paused and took a deep breath, trying to keep himself from lashing out. He turned slowly.
"Well?" he asked. "What is it?"
Near nodded slightly to Gevanni, who reached into his pocket and produced a folded slip of paper, which he handed to Mello.
The blond flicked it open and scanned it. It was an address just outside L.A.; he knew the area. A cell phone number was scrawled beneath it.
"What is this?" he demanded.
Near's back was turned, and his voice betrayed only slight amusement.
"That," he answered, "is an address."
Mello's eyes flashed with anger. "No shit, Near," he spat. "Whose address?"
Near paused, but Mello assumed it was more to annoy him than actual hesitation.
Mello's head snapped up, but he was struck speechless. After a moment of waiting for Mello's response, Near continued, "I tracked him down in the even that one or both of us were killed and he had to step up," he paused, "but I know how much he means to you, so I thought you should have this."
Mello looked down and turned away. "He won't want to see me," he muttered, "not after what I did to him."
"Of course he will," Near argued, demeanor unchanged. "Matt loves you Mello. Why is beyond my understanding," – Mello scowled – "but nevertheless, he does. Go to him – for both your sakes."
Mello was stunned, but he recovered quickly and grudgingly spoke the two words he never thought would pass his lips.
It was fortunate for Near that Mello could not see the faint smirk that crossed his face as he responded, "You're most welcome."
"Without another word, Mello turned and left the SPK headquarters, pulling out his phone as soon as the doors closed behind him. He dialed the number on the paper and held his breath as he waited for an answer.
The ringing paused and was quickly replaced by the faint tinny sound of video game music, and a familiar, but slightly deeper, voice.
A/N: *claps* *dances* I quite like this. It makes me smile. I hope you all enjoyed the hinted MxM there as well. I love that pairing with all my heart. It is my OTP of every fandom in the world. Please review and let me know what you think!
