Angel nodded at Lorne, signaling to the green demon that he was ready to proceed with the biggest moment of his life.
Lorne grabbed the microphone from the band they'd hired for Cordelia's birthday bash. "Can I have your attention, everyone? Thanks. Would the birthday girl come forward, please?"
Cordelia Chase smiled and made her way to where Lorne was standing, just off the Hyperion's front desk. "Sit down, Princess," Lorne told her, indicating the chair at his side. He turned back to the audience. "Our friendly neighborhood vampire has a few words he'd like to say. Angel."
Angel made his way to Cordy's side and took her hand in his. "Cordy, I can't remember a time when you weren't there by my side. And to be honest, I don't want to. You are the sun in my world, the light in my darkness. You made me realize that while life has its' dark spots, it isn't always that way. It can be beautiful and right. You are the love of my life and my dearest friend." He took a small box out of his pocket and opened it. Dropping to one knee, he showed it to her. "Cordelia Chase, will you marry me?"
For once in her life, Cordelia was speechless. Tears fell silently down her face as she looked at the man she loved more than life itself. Smiling through her tears, she nodded. "Yes, Angel. Yes, I will marry you."
Angel wiped her tears away with the tips of his thumbs and slipped the one karat princess cut diamond engagement ring onto the third finger of her left hand. When her eyes met his, there was a tenderness there that nearly took his breath away. He leaned in and kissed her, all the love he felt for her clearly evident in that kiss. "I love you, Cordy," he whispered, so softly that only she could hear.
Cordy smiled and ran her hand across his cheek tenderly. "I love you, too, Angel. More than I ever thought possible."
Lorne took that moment to announce, "The newly engaged Angel and Cordelia." The applause was thunderous. He signaled the band and Feels Like Home began playing.
Angel pulled Cordy onto the dance floor and into his arms. "Happy Birthday, Cordy," he told her as they swayed to the music. She just smiled as she lay her head on Angel's chest, his arms holding her tight.
And for Cordy, it truly was. It was the happiest birthday she'd ever had.
