Prologue

"Get back here, Potter!" a 9-year-old Harry James Potter heard yelled at him as he ran. He glanced back briefly and saw his cousin, Dudley Dursley, and his friends Piers Polkiss and Malcolm Braddock running towards him, about a half block back. This was a favourite game of Dudley's gang. They called it "Harry-hunting" and thought it great fun. For Harry, however, it was anything but.

'I am getting tired of always being chased,' Harry thought as he rounded the corner. 'Why can't they pick on someone their own size for once? Then again, there ISN'T anyone their size! Wait... here's a good place to hide!' He ducked into the Little Whinging Public Library and stepped to the side. He leaned over and placed his hands on his knees, panting for breath.

Once Harry had caught his breath, he glanced around, now fully realizing where he was. It had been a long time since he had been in the public library. In fact, the only time he had ever been in it was when he had been sent in to mimeograph some papers for his Aunt Petunia, Dudley's mother.

Cautiously making his way over to the nearest bookshelf, Harry kept staring at everything in awe. 'I think I'm in heaven,' he thought. 'A place full of nothing but books, magazines, and newspapers. Wow! They even have rooms where you can listen to cassette tapes! There's no way Dudley and his friends would ever be caught dead in here!'

He decided that whenever he got done with his chores for the day, he would come here to avoid being chased by Lard-O and Co®.

"Hermione! Are you still sitting up there reading?" a frustrated Emma Granger called up the stairs. "Come down here – your supper is getting cold!"

"Sorry, Mum. I'll be down in a minute," Hermione called out. She placed a bookmarker in her book, The Essential Writings of Blessed John XXIII, and placed it on the table next to her rocking chair. Noticing the due date stamp on the cover, she realized that she would have to stop by the library the next day and renew it, since her mother and dad refused to buy her any more books.

With the thought of asking her mother for a ride to the library the next day, she headed down to eat her supper.
