Author's Note: A ficlet based on Hello Saferide's song 'Anna'… I had my iPod on shuffle, it came on and I thought about Ginny. It's a really good song by a rather underappreciated band so give it a listen. This is set about a year after DH. (not counting the epilogue)
A not-so-vague Disclaimer: I am not JK Rowling or a member of Hello Saferide, so I don't own anything.
"You know, we could have had a daughter
And we could have named her Anna
And she would have been a sweetheart
But with punk rock manners"
"I can't do this anymore," Ginny felt like she was going to double over, as if she had been punched in the stomach. She looked back towards the table where her family was sat. A banner was floating over it with the words 'Congratulations Ginny' written across it in her mother's cursive. Hermione smiled at her but soon turned back to talk to Ron, not noticing the look on her friend's face. The party had been to celebrate the end of Ginny's seventh year of Hogwarts and, despite herself; she had been expecting something… important to happen. She bit her lip, she wasn't that kind of girl, she didn't want to be that girl, the girl that cried at eighteen because she had been expecting her boyfriend propose. But she had been caught up in it, the romance that came when a war was barely over, dating the boy who had ended it.
"And she'd never had to know what it's like when your heart breaks"
"What?" She finally said her voice cracking. He looked at her, sadness in his eyes and she immediately felt sorry for him. She instinctively started to reach up to touch his cheek but when she noticed what she was doing she bought her hand down, clenching her fists. She should hate him.
"It's not you… I'm just not, we're just not…" He trailed off. "I just can't…" He began again.
"Be with me?" She asked, hating herself for saying those words, for being so pathetic.
"Gin, you're great… It's not you I just don't…" He paused, obviously choosing the words carefully. "Like girls."
"But what about me? Did you ever like me?" She didn't want to think what she sounded like and was thankful that her family were at the other side of the garden.
"I did… But I don't…"
"Like me anymore?" She finished his sentence. "Or, what did you say? Love me anymore?"
"Gin, there was a war on…"
"And you thought you were going to die? Or I was?" She was now looking him straight in the eyes, not allowing him to look away from her. A breeze rippled through the sunny garden and Ginny realized that her cheeks were wet. When did she start crying? Harry seemed aware of that as well, his face creased in concern for her.
"I really did love you Ginny."
"How did you stop?" He shook his head. "No, you don't have a right to silence. Tell me."
"You don't want to know," he started.
"Tell me." He took a deep breath.
"I… started to like someone else."
"Who?" She asked, not really wanting to know.
"Draco," was his reply. Her eyes widened.
"Malfoy? You're in love with Malfoy? He's a Death Eater Harry!"
"He can be good… We just have to give him a chance."
"You're lying to yourself, Harry." She said, walking away from him. When she walked past the table she saw the faces of her family members crease in concern. She took her drink and walked inside, walking up the stairs to her bedroom in a daze. Apparently this was what her life after Hogwarts was going to be.
"I'm real sorry Anna, you never got to be
'Cause your daddy moved on and he left me"
