He walked straight up to me, leaving his companion openmouthed behind him. He said, in a voice smooth as velvet, "What have you done?"

Confused, I furrowed my brows and said nothing.

His companion came up behind him and asked, "What have you done?" She looked straight into my eyes. The pain I felt next is indescribable. I fell to the dirt road, writhing in pain. I did not scream, though. Maybe if I had, my life today would have been different.

The pain subsided slowly. Shaking, I slowly rose to my feet. I realized that I was sobbing.

"What did I do?" I asked shakily.

"You have told our secret to everyone!" shrieked the girl.

"Wh…who are you?" I asked, dazed.

"You know who I am!"

"No I don't! I'm not the one that you want!"

The girl looked confused. She pulled the boy back, and after a whispered conversation, the girl asked me, "Who are you?"

"Anastasia Katchmodova."

"Right…and is there a shorter version?"

"Nastya…" I could feel the blackness at the edge of my vision threatening to envelop me. My consciousness slipping away, I fell once again to the ground. Strong arms reached out and supported me, and then there was nothing.

I woke up in a stone room, dazed and disoriented. I could still feel the burning pain that I had felt for the past three days. The boy was still sitting there, where he had been the whole time, keeping watch over me.

I sat up, feeling more powerful than I had ever felt. At home, there had never been much to eat, and often we went to bed hungry.

The boy had told me that his name was Alec, but that was all. Now, I wanted answers.

"Who are you? Where am I? What am I?"

Thus began my life as a vampire.
