"Careful, or I'll take your present back," Tony said as he flipped through one of the many catalogs he had sitting on his desk.
"We have a rule, remember? No presents," Ziva responded, pointing accusingly at him.
"But if I had gotten you one, you'd be sorry," Tony joked, reaching over to answer his phone. Ziva sat down at her desk with a confused expression on her face, staring at him.
December 24, Christmas Eve
"That was very nice, Tony," Ziva said after Tony had given his secret Santa gift to Dolores from Human Resources. "I think she liked her gift. A lot."
"Yeah, I guess she did," Tony said, reaching around Ziva to push the button on the wall for the elevator. "She even got a little teary-eyed. So did you." He smiled at Ziva as they stepped into the elevator.
"I could tell that she was truly grateful, Tony." Ziva turned around in the elevator and faced the door as Tony did.
"Yeah, you're right," he said, smiling. "Aww, now I feel all gooey inside."
Ziva giggled. "You look it, too," she noted, glancing down at his tiny beer gut. Tony quickly sucked in his stomach and looked straight ahead.
He turned away and flicked the switch of the elevator. Ziva turned towards him, surprised. "What, Tony?"
He faced her again. "Look, Zi…I know I promised not to get you anything, but…" Tony whispered, reaching into his pocket. "I thought this would…you know…be nice…"
He ignored her and pulled out a small box. He handed it to her and she silently opened it. It was a necklace, a Star of David. There were little purple and blue stones in the gold star. It was beautiful.
"So, do you like it?" Tony asked nervously. "It's not much, but-"
"Tony, it's beautiful," Ziva said slowly. "This must have cost a fortune!"
"That doesn't matter. It wasn't that much."
"Tony, how much was this? I don't want you spending money on me!"
"Less than $200."
"Okay…less than $300."
$300??? Ziva thought. Ziva, you better think fast, because you didn't get him anything.
"Tony, thank you," she said, looking into his bright emerald eyes. "Thank you so much."
"Well, I know you lost your necklace back in Somalia, so…" he said, blushing. "Happy belated Hanukkah, Ziva."
She looked into his eyes, took a deep breath, and stood up on her toes. She leaned in. Tony did not resist. She pressed her lips to his and let them linger there for a moment. When she pulled back, he was smiling.
"What was that?" Tony said, still grinning.
"That was my gift to you. Merry Christmas, Tony." She smiled and leaned in to kiss him again.
