Disclaimer: I might love to play Dark Cloud, but that still doesn't mean I own it.
AN: I was wondering to myself why Paige doesn't join Toan in his quest and I came up with this. Enjoy.
"Come on Paige, it'll be fun!" Toan said cheerfully to his friend Paige.
"Well, it'll get us out of dullsville anyway." Paige replied with a smile. Ever since they were five years old, Paige and Toan had been talking about leaving Norune. Now, at nine years old, standing at the edge of the village boundaries, they were finally preparing to take their first step outside Norune's boundaries.
Stepping forward, she suddenly felt a tremendous pain charge through her and collapsed on the ground in agony. In a panic, Toan rushed over to her yelling for help. As she steadily blacked out, she could see her father rushing towards her. Then, nothing.
When Paige opened her eyes, she was lying on her bed and her father was sitting at her bedside with a worried expression on his face. He pulled her into a tight hug, with tears running down his cheeks.
"Don't ever scare me like that again!" he whispered softly.
"Dad, what happened to me?" Paige asked fearfully.
"To answer that question, we have to go back to the day you were born." Pike replied calmly as he began to describe the events of that fateful day.
Pike held onto his wives hand as yet another painful contraction ripped through her, causing her to squeeze his hand even harder.
"Push Sarah push!" the Old Hag ordered. As the closest thing the village had to a midwife, the Old Hag had been present at every birth in Norune.
"I AM PUSHING" Sarah screamed back at her and the Old Hag merely smiled at her encouragingly.
"That's it, that's it." Old Hag told Sarah in a soothing voice. (Her name wasn't really Old Hag, but she'd been around so long that the name had stuck.)
Suddenly the contractions increased and suddenly they stopped. And then a sudden and disturbing silence.
"I'm sorry, but it appears your baby girl didn't have the strength to survive." The Old Hag told her in a sad voice.
"Noooooo!" Sarah screamed at her as she grabbed the still body of her stillborn child. "There is another way." She whispered and she placed her finger over the baby's chest. A flow of pink holy magic began to flow between the two and Sarah gave her husband a sad smile.
"Look after our daughter. Please." She whispered to Pike, her face going pale and a flash of realisation crossed Pike's face.
"No! You can't do this!" he yelled in panic. "Please, there has to be another way!" But it was too late. Sarah, his wife and a former priestess of Dran, was dead. There was a momentary silence. Then, without warning, the baby girl began to wail. Taking the baby into his arms, Pike began to comfort her.
"She'll never be able to leave the village now, you know." The Old Hag told him sadly.
"Why?" Pike asked as tears ran down his cheeks.
"It's the price of your wife's sacrifice. Dran's guardian magic is limited to this village, so she is limited to this village. Do you have a name for her?" The Old Hag replied. Pike stopped to think for a minute.
"Paige." He finally said. "That's what we were planning on calling her. Paige."
Paige looked at her father, who was openly crying by now.
"I miss your mother so much. But I wouldn't swap you for the world." He told her quietly and Paige hugged her father, who hugged her back.
Four years later.
Paige watched as her best friend walked through the village gates once more, this time to save the world and wished she could join him.
"Good luck Toan." She whispered in his ear before he left and he grinned at her.
"I'll make sure to come back for you. I promise." He replied.
