For PoseidaxLunar's Songfic challenge at the Harry Potter fanfiction Challenges Forum.

The song is "Run" by Snow Patrol, and the lyrics are theirs. Narcissa, Lucius and Draco belong to JKR of course.

Light Up, Light Up

I'll sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go

They are alone at last. Draco is downstairs in the library, huddled in the big armchair in front of the fire, too shocked at being alive, at being free, to do anything, or even to say anything coherent.

And Lucius and Narcissa, now that their frantic concern for their only son is over, are alone together in their luxurious bedroom. But they know that it will not be for long. Draco's freedom is assured. If they are lucky Narcissa too will remain free; but they know that Lucius will not.

You've been the only thing that's right
In all I've done

He wants to tell her, to show her how she has been right all this time in putting the three of them – their little family – first above all else. But he does not know how; he cannot find the right words. He runs his hand along the angle of her jaw, and buries his face in her silky hair and inhales her scent and wishes he could stay here forever, that he need not find the words because they have all the time they want to understand each other.

But it cannot be. He has to try.

"Thank you," he murmurs, and it is a strange, almost foreign word on his lips. "You. Draco. You were right all along." His voice breaks.

She shakes her head and kisses him hard and deep and long, and he hopes that she understands.

There is a banging on the door downstairs. They have come for him.

Louder louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbye
I nearly do

He holds her tighter. He cannot do this. He cannot let her go now. He does not know how.

But she does. Once again, she is the strong one, the one who will make it right.

"You must go with them," she says, and somehow she makes the harsh words sound like a caress or a blessing. "But it will be alright. They have not beaten us."

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

She pulls away from his too-tight grasp and takes his hand, leading him down the wide staircase to the hallway, where Draco is standing wide-eyed and frightened-looking. She kisses her husband and then her son, and she goes to open the door.

"It will come right," she says softly as she puts her hand on the chain to draw it back.

Have heart my dear
We're bound to be afraid

She smiles as she pulls the heavy oak door open, and suddenly Lucius is not afraid any more.
