"I'm nothing special, Castle," Beckett told him, a sad little smile gracing her flawless features.

Castle wasn't often surprised, but this was one of those times. He took her hand and led her to the sofa in his New York City apartment. "You're wrong."

She looked up at him in surprise. "What?"

He smiled. "You're wrong. You're not just special, Kate Beckett. You're extraordinary."

For one of the few times she could remember, Beckett was left speechless. A small smile was beginning to show itself.

"Your very presence bathes whatever room you walk into in sunshine. Your smile warms my heart. You make me want to be a better man. I--"

"What?" she prompted, her eyes searching his.

"I love you," he finished softly.

She smiled. "I love you, too. I don't know when or how it happened, but one day I looked up and couldn't even begin to imagine my life without you."

Castle lowered his face to hers in a soft, sweet kiss. And it was perfect.

When Alexis and his mother returned from shopping an hour later, they hadn't moved from the sofa. Instead, they lay wrapped in each other's arms, fast asleep. "Looks like he finally told her," Alexis whispered to her grandmother.

"And it's about time," Martha replied. "He's a good man and he deserves a good woman, but don't tell him I said so."

"Yes, he is," Alexis agreed."They're perfect for each other."

"Come on, let's go out and get some lunch and leave the two lovebirds alone," Martha told her granddaughter.

After they'd slipped back out the door, Castle looked at the woman in his arms. "I guess they approve," he told her with a smile.

"I guess they do," she agreed, smiling. And with those words, she snuggled deeper into his arms and closed her eyes again. "I love you, Rick Castle," she told him, opening her eyes briefly and looking deep into his dark ones.

"And I love you, Kate Beckett," he told her, kissing her softly. He pulled her body tighter against his and closed his own eyes. Life couldn't get much better than this, he thought just before he joined his love in dreamland.
