A/N: This is the product of a real conversation I had with my brother at 11:30 at night the night before New Year's Eve as we attempted to sleep in the living room of our grandparents' house in Nowhere, Mississippi with three very loud clocks, all ticking at different times. We were obviously delusional, but it struck me as the kind of conversation Matt and Mello might have.

"Mels, why do we have to have so many damn clocks in this room?" Matt broke the almost silence of their apartment, unable to take the constant ticking any longer.

Mello paused in absently drawing on Matt's chest and looked around them. There was an ordinary wall clock across the room, Mello's watch on the nightstand, and from the living room they could hear the ticking of a miniature grandfather clock someone in the mafia had given Mello years before. They had silenced the chimes almost immediately, but the thing obnoxiously persisted in ticking as loudly as possible. Most days they didn't notice it, but tonight it was grating on Matt's last nerve.

"I don't know," Mello answered finally. "It's not all that many, and you've never cared before."

"I never noticed how annoying it was before,' Matt responded. "It's like the common room at Wammy's. Remember that huge grandfather clock?"

"God, yes," Mello groaned, rolling onto his back to stare at the ceiling. "You could hear that thing chime through the whole fucking building." He chuckled slightly, "Remember the time we tried to break it?"

Matt laughed as well. "We would have done more than try if Roger hadn't walked in, threatening to tell L about it."

"Like L would have cared," Mello scoffed. "He hated that thing as much as we did."

Silence settled between them once again.

"It's like something out of a horror movie." Matt mused finally. He made a sweeping motion with his hand. "The Clocks."

Mello laughed and moved closer to the redhead. "The next great Hitchcock movie."

"Or maybe," Matt continued, "Attack of the Clocks. You see, they've been observing us all these years, lying in wait…"

Mello, by this point, was rolling on the bed in laughter.

"And that clock from Beauty and the Beast, what was his name?" Matt asked.

Mello managed to choke through his laughter, "How the hell would I know?"

Matt waved it off. "Meh, I'll look it up in the morning. Anyway, he was their leader, you see. And they've been waiting for just the right moment to attack." The blond erupted in fresh peals of laughter.

"I should make an instructional video," Matt declared. "'How to Kill a Clock'. For when the attack begins."

"It just might save your life," Mello offered, smiling.

Matt snapped his fingers, "Yes! I like that!" Turning to Mello he added, "You'll be my producer."

The blond rolled his eyes, an indulgent smile on his face.

"Matt," he replied, "in all your talk about clocks, have you bothered to look at one? It's half-past midnight, and you're losing it. Go to sleep."

With that, he sat up to kiss his beloved red-headed nutcase and settled into his arms again. Matt smiled. "Good night, Mels. I love you."

Mello didn't bother opening his eyes. "Love you too. Night."

A few moments of silence passed, and Matt leaned down to whisper in the other's ear, "And don't worry Mello. I'll protect you from the evil clocks."

"Shut up and sleep, Matt."

A/N: I'd much rather have Matt protecting me than the one-eyed, almost deaf, fifteen-year-old dog that my brother said would protect us. =D This was just a random bit of inspiration borne of my dear brother's sleep deprivation. Hope you liked it. Please review!
