STORY SUMMARY: Secret military programs, the discovery of admantium, mutant terrorism, and the development of the Cure all have far-reaching effects that will eventually span the globe and change the face of evolution.

DISCLAIMERS: All characters and organizations (with the exception of small, mostly unnamed minor characters) throughout the series are the product of Marvel.

CANONICAL NOTES: This story arc utilizes movieverse canon for events, characters, and relationships: X1, X2, X3, and XO (Wolverine: Origins). Powers for major characters follow movieverse, with the exception of Remy LeBeau/Gambit who is based on comicverse. Characters granted minor roles in the films or that do not appear in the films are pulled from comicverse. Organizations and progams will follow comicverse. Weapon X will follow movieverse: as a project of the United States military instead of Canada's.

LANGUAGE AND ACCENTS: Cajun French is courtesy of Heavenmetal (many thanks). I will attempt to reproduce accents in this story arc.

Story Summary: A moment of silence in mourning for their departed prince...

Canonical Notes: Set shortly following the events of Old New England Saw and sometime between XO and X1.

Author's Note: Okay, here goes the explanation of what's up, what's not, and why. Life is crazy. Aunt is hurt. We're all taking care of her. Work's a bear. Both of them. I'm behind on review replies, behind on writing, behind on original stuff. This is poem length. Took me ten minutes to whip up. Okay? Not like I'm wasting good time I could use on other things. The next chapter of Whisper is coming along. If you want to see what I'm up to, I will be updating sporadically on my actual personal website (located on my profile as Homepage if you don't know how to get there). I'm scribbling along slowly. This is the only thing I've actually finished so far. So not quite hiatus, not quite active. Please be kind. Anyway... Yet another piece of The Burning story arc. I know it the huge linchpin pieces aren't done yet: Ember, Old New England Saw, Tears of the Goddess, Skin, but hopefully you'll like it anyway. I'm in love with this story arc right now. And I'm going to just shut up now and let you read.

- What -

The most powerful law enforcement agencies in the country know something has happened. The power brokers and dealers of lives in high society know something has happened. The underbelly of crime and the seedy cities know something has happened.

And in that sprawling city of New Orleans...

The ladies in their glittering parties know something has happened. The bankers and financiers know something has happened. The wealthy, the influential, the political know something has happened. The cops on their quiet beats know something has happened. The whores with their pimps know something has happened. The street gangs, the street thieves know something has happened.

- Is -

In the silent weeks that follow, the quiet spell without a pinch, all the underworld holds its breath.

It is the recoil after a gun has been shot. The Thieves draw back a step, a moment of silence in mourning for their departed prince.

Then they strike.

- It -

And what is it if Marius Boudreaux, that King of Assassins, has misplaced items of great importance? What is it if his daughter spurns him, absent from his functions and dinners? What is it if a fresh grave lies unvisited by friend or by foe?

What is it if the Thieves retaliate at anyone, anything that falls within their power to take? What is it if there is no officer with enough clout or enough skill to stop them?

What is it if a worn playing card, the Queen of Hearts, taped to a battered mirror speaks more eloquently to a woman's loss than her brother's fallen sword?
