Notes: Written for a prompt on my livejournal.
Summary: "The real question isn't what does someone like Haruhi Suzymiya mean to me, but what I mean to Haruhi." Kyon/Haruhi drabble.
It didn't happen overnight. It wasn't some crazy sudden event. The world wasn't at stake. At first it was just the ponytail. Then her hair in general. Her ribbons. Then those long, long legs. The way she smiled when it wasn't just her 'I've got a crazy idea' smile. Her button nose. Her insatiable curiosity.
But the recognition was sudden. When Haruhi convinced (well, more like molested) Miss Asahina into trying on an Angel costume for part of her latest scheme, I wasn't interested at all. Haruhi was wearing an opposite, but matching Devil costume. I looked her up and down, then all the way up again.
I looked into her eyes.
"Sorry, what was that?" Koizumi asked. I'm pretty sure he was distracted by a couple walking past. What I wasn't so sure if he was distracted by the man or the woman.
"Miss Asahina left, and it was just me and Haruhi. I looked into her eyes."
"We just stood there. For what seemed like minutes. Then out of nowhere she snapped and told me to stop staring."
"What do you suppose that means?"
"You remember that dream.. no.. Haruhi's new reality?"
"I was the only one Haruhi wanted to be with her."
"Yes, we told you. I still don't quite understand how you haven't figured it all out yet."
Miss Asahina, Time Traveller. Koizumi, Esper. Yuki. Humanoid Interface created by Aliens.
Myself, ordinary boy?
"I'm here because of Haruhi. Do I represent normality? The desire to continue living as normal in the face of extraordinary events and people?"
"Perhaps. What do you think?"
"The real question isn't what does someone like Haruhi Suzymiya mean to me, but what I mean to Haruhi."
"Well, that's what it comes down to. You know the question, I can't help you figure out the answer. Goodbye Kyon." And with that, he left.
So. Normality. What exactly would normality be. For me. For Haruhi.
"Yes?" She turned to face me.
I walked over to her, cupped my hand and caressed the side of her face.
"What are you doing?" Her tone was weak, shaky, unsure.
"Haruhi, do you want me?"
I felt the answer in my hand, even as I pulled it around to the back of her neck. I felt tiny goosebumps, and they traveled over, causing my entire body to shiver.
I leaned in, bent down slightly, and I kissed her. Just when I thought maybe I didn't have her answer, not just of my question to her, but to the question of what I mean to her.
Haruhi kissed back.
No monsters. No blaring music. No choirs of angels. The world didn't turn grey and dull. No intense bright light show. I didn't wake up in my bed.
All I felt was Haruhi, and I had my answer.
What did I mean to Haruhi?
