She sees him in costume for the first time on a cloudy night, when traffic is down and murders come fast. Harley carries her sledgehammer on one shoulder. Scarecrow has biological weapons up his sleeve. Graffiti paints the Narrows around them with swear words and sonnets.

It works well for him. His suit is all sharp-edged professionalism beneath a mutilated face born from burlap. He leers without expression, analyzes without thinking, threatens without words. Briefly, Jonathan Crane startles her. She grasps that this is something terribly personal and wonders what.


The hug hits him like a locomotive. She forgets.
