A/N: Eeek it's almost four in the morning and the dang plot bunnies just won't leave me alone. This one is inspired by the Martina McBride song I Love You. I hope you like it.

My Favorite Time Of Year

A warm breeze blew across the Hogwarts grounds, rustling the bright green leaves of the trees as the sun shone down brightly. Lily Evans lifted her head to the sun, her eyes closed and a smile on her face. Remus Lupin, whom was walking next to her couldn't help but smile at the pure joy on her face. There was so much love in that one smile, that it was obvious to anyone around him. But as it was, Lily's eyes were still closed and she didn't notice a thing.

"This is my favorite time of year," she said suddenly. "When finals are over with, the weather is warm and sunny, and we have a few days to just relax before heading home for the holidays." She opened her eyes, and started making her way down toward the lake, Remus following quietly behind her.

Reaching the lake side, she peeled off her shoes and socks, and walked into the water while Remus sat down on a dry patch of grass a few feet away. "This is my least favorite time of year," Lily said pushing a pebble around with her toes under the water. She looked up to see the quizzical look he was giving her, and let out a laugh. "I love this weather, the very beginning of summer; I love knowing that I'm going to get to see my family again in just a few days; and I love getting to hang around doing absolutely nothing, not having to study, nothing, just whatever I please." She smiled at him for a moment before it faded. "But I hate leaving everyone behind, leaving the castle… leaving you." Her voice was barely above a whisper as she finished. She looked away, afraid to meet his eyes.

"Lily," he said just as quietly, never looking away from her. The love in his eyes was back, and if she turned to face him again there was no way that she could mistake it. "I'll miss you too." His voice was still quiet, but was filled with a strange intensity that made Lily turn to face him.

She was silent as she watched him, but her eyes grew wide in understanding. She walked out of the water and sat down beside him, never taking her eyes off of him.

Neither one dared say anything for a moment, just sat and watched the other. Lily's face betrayed nothing of what she was thinking, but her eyes were another story – they showed the battle between love and fear that was waging war inside her. After a moment the battle seemed to end, and the fight had subsided with a clear winner.

"I love you," she blurted without a seconds thought, her cheeks turning as red as her hair. A smile spread across his face before she had even finished her sentence, but still he said nothing.

"Say something," she snapped, embarrassed. He leaned forward in response, his face only inches away from hers.

"I love you too," he said and pressed his lips to hers.
