Naomi stood at the top of the stairs, face red and tear stained. "I'm sorry."
Emily almost didn't hear the words for how softly they were spoken. Blinking back tears, she said, "It doesn't matter. It doesn't change anything." Naomi's gaze dropped to her feet. "Why?"
"I love you." Naomi took a deep breath and crossed her arms. "It scares me. I didn't know what to do."
The house seemed impossibly silent as the minutes dragged by. Emily sighed. "This will take time."
"I don't care. I'll do anything," Naomi said, voice breaking, and Emily lowered her eyes to the card in her hand.
"I know," she said. "I know."
