Disclaimer: Neither of these characters are OCs, therefore I do not own. Also (while this isn't a disclaimer so much as an explanation for those unfamiliar with the comics), Invitation takes place when Jon was rather younger than he is now. Suffice to say teenage Scarecrow liked a girl with disastrous consequences.

Invitation

He can't swim.

There is a river near Sherry's house, far enough into the woods that interruptions become unlikely. They had been discussing some of the more inane tendencies in recent films when, declaring the weather disgusting, she'd lifted the hem of her shirt.

"Jonathan?"

His head is turned, his eyes are shut. "What?"

"Hey, um…this really isn't a big deal you know. Right?"

"What do you mean?"

"It's like… I guess, try and think of it as a bikini or something. I just don't wanna get my clothes wet. You okay?"

"Fine." He still hasn't turned around. Sherry puts a hand on his shoulder, and he can hear the smile in her voice.

"Want to come in?"

"No." She'll laugh at him, or make that face she does when he says something that doesn't fit, doesn't relate—that face she makes when he secretly embarrasses her. He's not Bo anyway, he's all arms and legs and ribs with scars dotting the skin in between. It isn't what people are supposed to look like. "I'm fine."

"You sure?"

"I don't feel like it Sherry. I'm fine."

"Third time you've said that, Jonny-boy."

"Well, then I must really mean it." He manages to meet her face, taking in every freckle. He pays no attention to the curve of her body, how she's leaning in to address him, the shorts she's already unzipped. "Go on."

A shrug, and he feels himself burning as Sherry strips further. "If you say so." Without a backwards glance, she slides into the water.

Jonathan Crane reads his book. He ignores the sweat trickling down his neck. He ignores her.

Author's Note: I don't know why I keep throwing scantily clad women at Jon. It wasn't even on purpose this time. I'd just realized that he doesn't know how to swim (who would teach him?), and that even if he could he'd be uncomfortable in a suit, plus...well, Sherry isn't exactly modest. Um. Another fun fact--I don't think Jonathan got to really watch movies until college. Might've snuck one in so he'd know what people were talking about, but that bit of the conversation must have been started by Miss Squires.
