AN: Just a random one shot, full of cuteness and Reeve being parental. Reeve seems the type to be parental. This was written quickly to try and get myself back into writing properly.
Rufus had been well brought up, trained to run the company. He knew lots of his employees had triggers, things that made them act irrationally, and he fought to keep them away from them. That's why Reno was banned from drinking brandy, Elena got several days off at the start of the month, and no one was allowed to insult Tseng's heritage. But there was one big trigger, and it appeared he had missed it entirely. He felt like a fool
He stared at the CCTV camera in disbelief, scarce able to process what it was that he was viewing. His screen revealed Reeve, bustling around his office. This time he wasn't working on a robot, or fiddling on the computer. Instead, he was focussed on another figure in the room. At first, Rufus had not recognised the figure, assuming that it was another one of Reeve's orphans. If no children had been brought back from missions, the engineer had a tendency to go and fetch a child from the slums, care for them and find a new family for them. Yet when he had switched to the coloured view, he could see only too clearly who it was.
Reeve smiled at the little boy who was resting on the table, examining him carefully. There were cuts and bruises, but that was to be expected. He was thin, with a tattoo on his wrist, a serial number. He looked at the other nervously.
"You're going to be alright."
The boy frowned, arms wrapped around his legs. He didn't want to be here, he was confused, and he felt more alone than he had felt ever
"Where are my brothers?" His eyes were wide, he was visibly disorientated, confused, not knowing what was happening or what was going on.
Reeve sighed, looking down at Kadaj. He crossed over, wrapping his arms around the boy's shoulders.
"I don't know. The lifestream has chosen to give you a new chance without Jenova's voice..." Kadaj looked down sadly.
"I miss her. I miss my mother and my brothers. They were the only people who have ever looked after me." He curled up, frightened, and reached for Souba. It wasn't at his hip where he belonged.
Cait looked over, and held up the sword.
"I took it. You can't be trusted with it yet." Kadaj sat up, trying to jump across and grab the blade. Reeve cuddled him, holding him in place. He gently stroked the boy's hair.
"It's alright, I'll take care of you. I'll look after you, I can be your family."
Frightened, Kadaj looked up and nodded. He didn't really have much choice about it, but the other man did seem kind.
There was a knock on the door, and Reeve looked up.
"Stay there Kadaj." He walked to the door, then beamed, moving aside to reveal Loz and Yazoo standing there. "Come in..."
He sat the two older boys on either side of Kadaj, walked over to a cupboard and returned with three cookies. He fed one to each of the boys, smiling indulgently at them.
"This is good, we can all take care of each other. You three can be part of society again." The three boys cuddled close to each other and nodded.
Unheard, and many floors above, Rufus slumped against the desk in shock.
