Alex cries in English class during King Lear, feels breath escape from lungs when Cordelia is brought before her father, too dead, too late. She shoves her chair back, ignores the gaping stares and the harsh slap of metal on a scratched cheap wooden floor, and runs.

With no conscious thought, Alex ends in Dr. Linus' tiny office. She stumbles in and sobs "How could anyone let their own daughter die?"

He wraps his arms around her, and her head slides in perfectly into his shoulder. Her sobs coat his shirt like blood as he tries "Throughout history…in great literature…"

Finally he closes his eyes. "I don't know."
