"A five minute hop into the future should do it!" the Doctor, running from one side of the TARDIS to another.

A hopeful smile spread across young Amelia Pond's face. "Can I come?"

The Doctor looked at her face, seeing such hope in there that he could barely think to turn her down.

"It's too dangerous," he apologised.

"Please?"

And he was done. "Oh, alright. It's only five minutes," he reasoned to himself, more than to her.

Amelia grinned and followed him, hoisting herself into the TARDIS and gasping in wonder at where she had found herself.

Upon rearriving at Amelia's house, it soon became apparent that the Doctor had overstepped the five minutes. At first they assumed only a few hours, but then it became clear that it was much longer than that.

When they met people who gaped over her likeness to little Amelia Pond who had disappeared 12 years previously, they knew they'd made a horrible mistake, but they didn't have time to dwell on it as they needed to finish saving the world.

And so they did, and then Amelia turned to the Doctor. "What about me, will you take me home now?"

"Can't. You never went home, remember?"

Amelia blinked, tears springing in her eyes. "Will you take me with you?"

"Can't, you're far too young for this. It's too dangerous."

"Then what's going to happen to me?"

The Doctor looked down. "I sorted it out with Rory here," he indicated the man that had once been her best friend, but now loomed over her, aged by the years as she hadn't been. "He's going to look after you. You're name's Amy Smith, and you're an orphan, okay?"

Rory smiled at her, delighted to have his best friend back, entirely unchanged.

Amy looked at him sceptically. "This isn't going to work."

"It's all we've got." said the Doctor.

Rory hugged her. "I'm sorry, Amelia, but it's going to have to do.'

Amy burst into tears as the Doctor stepped into his TARDIS and faded into a memory
