They say you learn something new every day.
Today, I learned that Light has weird ways of delivering apologies.
I told Dad and Light that I was going to sleep early because I had a really bad headache, but I didn't expect that headache to actually turn into a fever.
Of all the times to get sick, it HAD to happen when Light decided to come stay over for a few days.
Needless to say, trying to get up in the morning nearly ended in tears. Well, not literally, but you get the idea. I gave up pretty quickly.
"Hey, Hope? You alive?"
Someone was gently shaking me awake. I tried to say "What", but it sounded more like "Nnnnggh". A hand brushed aside my bangs and rested itself on my forehead. It felt oddly cool.
"You've got a fever."
I wanted to retort with a "Well, duh", but again it sounded like gibberish. Slightly more awake, I rolled over to see who was talking.
It was Lightning.
Oh, crap...of all people, why her?
"I'm...fine..." I finally managed to croak out something intelligible.
Lightning sighed, removing her hand.
"I'd love to believe you, but you sound drunk AND you're burning up."
"He went to the office, had something urgent to settle. I'll be back in a moment." I felt the bed shift as she got up and left the room.
I groaned and pulled the covers over my head. This was embarrassing.
I was roused to consciousness when someone none-too-gently yanked the bedcovers off me. I was about to protest, but was stopped by the placement of an ice cold towel on my forehead. I yelped.
"Of course it's cold. You don't expect me to use hot water on you, do you?"
"Give...me a break, Light...I'm sick, remember...?"
To my surprise, she smiled.
"Fine, but only this once."
I wasn't sure how long I was asleep for, but when I awoke, I found my head on Lightning's lap.
Needless to say, my face turned bright red. I wanted to move off, but she must have realized that and stopped me by starting to comb through my hair with her fingers. It was comforting; it reminded me of when my mom used to do it.
"L-Light...this is really embarrassing."
"What's there to be embarrassed about? You're still a kid."
"Th...that's not the point here!"
"Okay, well then - this is my way of saying sorry for that tickle attack yesterday morning."
"You're weird...it would be easier to just say sorry."
She gives me a shrug as a response, and continues stroking my hair.
I can't win against Lightning. But for this situation, I don't really want to.
