Chapter Twenty-Two: Without Love Gone Wrong, Lifeless Words Carry On
Author's Note: Sorry for the wait, this is something I wanted to do in this fanfic for awhile.
"Demons do not cry, are these the tears of some long dead child?" Gar asked. Raven was still there somewhere.
Gar noticed that the laughing stopped.
"Demons do not cry. You are a demon because you couldn't cry anymore right? Humans cry, and when their tears finally run dry, there's nothing left but a demon or a monster and one final prayer for death."
"So laugh demon, laugh that arrogant laugh of yours and remember, I beat you to it."
He saw it change, from laughter to tears. He could hear Raven's voice, she was crying.
Gar laughed, "Who is that?" he heard voices calling him. "The voices of children? I can hear them, the children. They're all playing and…" Gar reached his hand for the bright, beautiful sunlight. "I should go. They're all waiting."
The others glanced at each other; Gar had always been fond of children.
"Is...Is that really you, Terra?" he asked, she was there, and he could see children, playing and laughing, they were taking is hands.
"Garfield, no, no, no NO!" she reached for his shoulders, pulling him close to her.
Gar's vision was fading, he saw Raven crying, not that demonic thing that had attacked him.
"You mustn't cry, children. Say your prayers before you sleep."
His friends gathered around him as Raven burst into tears.
"Amen children," he sighed. The priest, Father Jason, who had witnessed the unearthly fight gazed down at him. He exhaled softly and didn't move or say another word.
"Amen." Jason nodded, the King was dead.
"WE can't tell anyone about this!" Raven ordered. Her friends were stunned; this was a major event, one that they couldn't just cover up.
"Give me two days, I will resurrect him in two days, if I fail, then we will make it known to the people, do you trust me?" Raven asked.
"Raven, are you sure you want to do this?" Richard asked, "People will be looking for him."
"I know," Raven told him, "I'll be able to bring him back to us."
"What do you want us to do with his body?' Victor asked.
"We should place it inside the church, there won't be services for three days," Richard suggested.
"Then that's what we'll do," Raven agreed, "I should have him back with us before then."
Raven placed his body inside the church. Jason was sworn to secrecy, which he agreed to and the others took turns guarding the building.
"Raven, what are you going to do?" Kori asked, placing her hand on her friend's shoulder.
"I'm going to another dimension, just for a few hours, I need to clear my head," she gave Kori a reassuring smile. "I'll return shortly."
Raven made her way to a clearing and set up the magic circle, she placed the candles down and lit them.
She sat down in the middle of the circle and began to chant, "Azarath Metrion Zinthos...Carazon Rakashas Endere...Vaserix Endrien Azarath...Azarath, Azarath!"
Raven recognized the swirling as the dimensional portal opened itself up to her, she began to fly, but as she neared Azarath, something began to unexpectedly pull her away.
"What's happening?" Raven asked fearfully, nothing had ever impeded her when she traveled to Azarath!
Unexpectedly, she stopped moving, Raven landed on the cold hard rock surface and glanced around. She glanced around, regaining her sense of direction. Raven stood in the midst of the endless space, she knew where she was, it was in a place between dimensions. She needed to clear her head and think. She needed Garfield back, but she had no idea how she'd go about doing that.
Raven let out a gasp and put a hand over her mouth, this wasn't possible was it? Could she be dreaming? There was a figure standing a short distance away from her. She sighed in disappointment, it looked just like him, but he wasn't the one she was looking for.
Suddenly, he shifted, his weight and did something completely unexpected, his ears twitched and he turned around, smiling. "I heard you behind me," he greeted her.
"Raven," a voice spoke to her.
She took a step back, it was Garfield, but it was not her Garfield, this one was green, had pointy ears and wore strange clothes she'd never seen before.
"Garfield?" Raven ran over and hugged him. He picked her up and spun her around, just like her Garfield. Some things never changed, and she loved that, and realized that no matter what dimension she was in, there would always be a Garfield Logan who loved her.
"Now this is a surprise!" he exclaimed, returning the hug. Raven was stunned, this was not her Garfield, but he still smiled and laughed the same way. "You hug me sometimes but not like this, you're a different version of Raven some other dimension, aren't you?"
"How did you know?" Raven inquired.
"Your clothes are different," Garfield observed. "What year is it in your world?"
She told him the year, "Oh! It's the Middle Ages, knights and castles and dragons and stuff like that, ow! My brain just hurts thinking about it, dude, massive headache!"
"Dude?" Raven raised an eyebrow; that was a completely foreign term to her.
"It's an expression I like to use," he explained, "Please, stop calling me Garfield; you're making me feel ridiculous. Call me Beast Boy, that way I can differentiate between myself and this other me."
"How did you get here Beast Boy?" Raven asked, she wondered if her emotional distress had accidentally pulled him into her dimension.
"I don't know, I got knocked out during a fight, that's all I know before I woke up here." Beast Boy rubbed his head.
'What do you do in your dimension?" Raven had often wondered if she had another life somewhere, apparently she did.
"We protect the ca city we live in, Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, my Raven, all of us, we keep the criminals from taking over the city," he explained.
"Their names are Richard Grayson, Kori Anders, and Victor Stone, aren't they?"
Beast Boy raised an eyebrow, "So we have the same names there huh, that's interesting!" He was intrigued. "So what about me?"
"Unfortunately, Beast Boy, in this dimension I've murdered you," Raven began to cry, "It was an accident, I'm so sorry."
Beast Boy pulled her into a hug, he knew if he was in her shoes, he'd want one, he could see she was upset. He comforted her. "It's okay, Rae, it's okay. Don't cry."
"Thank you," she whispered, wiping the tears from her eyes. She managed a smile, "He calls me Rae too."
Raven glanced over at him, "Can I…see your memories? I want to know how you met me."
He gave her a grin, the same mischievous smile she fell in love with, "Sure, but it's not like you're going to understand what's going on."
Raven placed her hand on his forehead and a thousand images began to flood her mind, people places, fascinating things that she couldn't name. Fighting criminals, a masked man named Slade, seeing the other Terra betray her friends and fight them. It made her upset; she decided her world's Terra was better. A sinister man named Brother Blood, and Malchior, there was another Malchior, he made her feel sick, fortunately, this Raven had never progressed beyond a hug, she was extremely grateful for that.
then her father came and she shuddered to think that he'd ended their world, she'd been strong enough to seal him away in her dimension, but she knew he was always trying to regain his freedom. She was amazed at herself for being able to use her power to defeat him, even she hadn't been able to completely seal him away, So many adventures and stories, but one memory stood out to her.
Raven could see her counterpart standing with Beast Boy in a place where they stored dead bodies. Raven could see he was hurt and could see her counterpart reaching for his shoulder.
"Ow," Beast Boy grunted.
"You're hurt," Raven told him. She was reaching out to heal his shoulder. Beast Boy was reaching back to try to touch the wound.
"I might be able to heal it," Raven told him.
He took her hand and gently held it, pushing it away from him.
Raven pulled off her hood, revealing her face to him.
"I just-I just want you to be okay," she told him.
He gave her a sidelong look. "I will be," he reassured her.
He gave her a look, "What?" he asked.
She grabbed him and kissed him sweetly.
Beast Boy was sitting cross-legged from her, he'd shift his weight back and forth, swaying in a rhythm, "Are you both happy?"
"Yes, we are," Beast Boy smiled. "And you two?"
"Well, before he died, we were going to have a baby," she admitted. "I just want him back so he can see the child when they're born."
"Oh, congratulations then, my Raven, well we haven't even gotten to the married part yet, not quite ready for that," Beast Boy smiled.
Beast Boy stood up, Raven touched his shoulder, "I'm curious, why do they call you "Beast Boy"?" she wondered at the strange alias.
"Ah that's because I can turn into any animal I wish," he smiled.
"Mine doesn't turn into animals, except this werebeast that I have seen him shift into."
"Show me," Raven was intrigued. Beast Boy sifted into a horse, a dog, a rat, and changed back into a human. Then he explained that there were other places in the world with all sorts of animals, and he shifted into a gorilla, a giraffe, a rhinoceros, and an eagle, explaining to her in detail about them.
Raven was interested in all these exotic creatures, and wondered if he enjoyed his powers, she didn't particularly enjoy hers, because of her father.
"Do you enjoy these gifts you have?" Raven asked.
"I wouldn't trade them for the world! I love being a hero! I love helping people! And if it weren't for these powers, I wouldn't have met you!" Beast Boy leaned in and kissed her cheek.
Raven was touched by the gesture of affection. "You're sweet, Beast Boy."
"it's the ears, chicks dig the pointy ears!" he stated as if it were a fact.
"Dude, when I get back, I'm telling your counterpart about you, she needs to learn to laugh and hug me more!"
Beast Boy cocked his head, "I can hear them calling for me, I gotta go, I hope you find a way to help your Garfield, he sounds like he's a great guy."
"Beast Boy, thank you," Raven smiled.
""Any time you need me, just call I'll come running, promise," Beast Boy grinned and she saw him slowly dissolve into thin air.
"My daughter, I can see you enjoyed the company of this other Garfield, would you like to see yours?' Trigon the Terrible's voice whispered in her ear.
"Quiet, Father, I will not accept help from you!" Raven spat, but then Raven remembered her counterpart, and how she'd defeated him, and Raven knew it was only a matter of time before her father excaped and came to her dimension, maybe she could use her father to resurrect Garfield.
"My dear daughter, can I not give you what you want? Don't you want your precious Garfield to come back to you?" Trigon the Terrible asked.
Raven knew her father was lying, he didn't really want her to be happy, he wanted her to be the portal to take over this dimension, but she'd seen what her counterpart had done, now she would use that knowledge to defeat her father.
"If I become the portal, will you resurrect Garfield, will you bring him back to me?" Raven asked, feigning eagerness. She didn't want to do this, but unlike her counterpart, she knew how this was going to end.
"Yes of course, my Gem, I'll do whatever you want, because a father must dote on his favorite child, and you've always been my favorite," Trigon sounded pleased.
Raven knew her father very well and she knew that he would resurrect her Garfield, only to kill him for his own wicked amusement, she'd make sure that wouldn't happen, but she'd feign ignorance, he was far too eager for his freedom.
"Father, I must return, I shall prepare for your arrival," Raven left him. She could hear him laughing. But Raven knew that his overconfidence was his downfall, and she was going to exploit it, and it didn't matter if she had to manipulate her father, she would bring Garfield back to her, just like he had tried to do for her, she was taking an enormous risk, but she knew it would be worth it, especially if it meant defeating her father for good.
Author's Note: Yes, this is indeed an Elseworld's fanfic. I hope you all enjoyed this short breather chapter.
