a/n: Just a little thing I found in a notebook while I was cleaning.
"I still can't believe you are marrying that pompous git." Severus said irritably, staring at the liquid in his glass instead of at the red head sitting opposite him.
Lily Evans, very soon to be Potter, sighed.
"He's changed Severus. He's grown up." The man looked up at her with one eyebrow raised. Lily met his gaze for a long moment before she broke into a grin and laughed.
"Okay, he'll never grow up exactly, but he has changed." Severus still looked skeptical but didn't say anything.
There was a short silence in which they both took drinks from their glasses.
"Where is he anyways, won't he be angry that his fiance is hosting a strange man in the middle of the night?" A hint of a smile played at the corners of his lips.
"You aren't strange Severus and he's out with Remus, Sirius and Peter for his," Her smile was crooked. "'stag' party."
Severus scowled but Lily ignored it.
"Besides, I wasn't going to tell him you were here, a girl can have some secrets." Severus said nothing and took a large swallow of his drink, finishing it off. Then he stood.
"I really must be leaving." Lily stood as well and followed him to the door.
He pulled on his cloak and stood there for a long awkward moment. Lily broke it by opening her arms wide and smiling sweetly.
Severus felt a twist in his stomach as her arms wrapped around him, his going around her automatically. She was warm against him and he could smell the lily of the valley shampoo in her hair. How very fitting.
"I've missed you Severus." Lily mumbled against his chest. He buried his face in her hair for a very brief moment, breathing her in.
"Me too." He whispered.
They pulled back enough to look at each other.
Bright green eyes met black and his resolve broke.
"I could make you happy Lily. You know I would."
"I love you." He cut across her gruffly.
Lily looked at him with sadness in her eyes. Then she slowly rose up on her toes and kissed him softly on the cheek.
"I love you too Severus, but-" He halted her with a shake of his head. He knew that she was going to say that the love she felt was different but he didn't want to hear it. He removed his arms from her waist and kissed her chastely on the forehead.
"Take it." He rasped haltingly through the pain. It was everywhere, almost blinding him and he felt a coolness. A blackness at the edges of everything and a chasm opening below him...
There was a voice. A sweet, soft voice he'd always know. Lily! Where was she?
"Look at me." He felt himself say and suddenly she was there. Her bright green eyes above him and the warmth of her hand holding his.
He exhaled, a peace coming over him. The green eyes were at once fading and coming into perfect focus. The faint warmth of a hand was replaced by the almost white heat of another. Bright white replaced the black and Severus Snape followed Lily home.
