Author's Note - Please note that even though the next few chapters including this one will have many Dylan and Kelly moments, most of which does/will tie into Brandon. This is still a Brandon & Kelly fanfic. Enjoy.
Chapter 8 - Gone But Not Forgotten
Brandon had a lot of time to think on his way back to his hotel room. He thought about the office, D.C., and of course, Kelly, due to the fact that he could still feel the effect of the slap that she gave him. The slap didn't hurt as much as what Kelly said. Kelly telling Brandon that their time together meant nothing more than a fling was more than enough reason to send Brandon packing. He wanted answers and Kelly gave him more than he bargained for. Brandon regretted accusing Kelly of using him for sex and that she was still in love with Dylan. However, what hurt even more was that he didn't get a chance to find out whether it was true or not. After all, Kelly never denied it.
Most of Brandon's stuff was still packed as he never planned on staying at the hotel on a permanent basis even if he were to move to L.A. In his wallet, he took out an old photo of him and Kelly that was taken back when they spent the summer together at Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota. Every time he looked at the photo, it reminded him of how much he missed those simpler times. It was also their first summer together as a couple. They were two carefree kids who played and laughed as if they didn't have a care in the world. Brandon put the photo back inside his wallet. He took out his phone and saw there was a message waiting for him. He didn't expect Kelly to call him back so soon but he wouldn't mind it if she did.
"Hello Brandon. This is Mr. Thomas. Look, I'm sure you found out about how disorganized the L.A. office is. I've given you almost two weeks to think about it but the boss upstairs really needs an answer from you. Please call me as soon as you get this. Thanks," said Mr. Thomas on the phone.
Brandon scanned his hotel room for a few seconds. He looked to his left. He looked to his right. He was alone. He picked up his phone and made the call. Surprisingly, Brandon seemed awfully calm in a situation like this.
We only hear his side of the conversation.
"Hello Mr. Thomas. It's Brandon," said Brandon.
"I'm good. How are you?" asked Brandon.
"I'm sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I'm just trying to make the best decision," said Brandon.
"Yes, I considered that too, sir. But I'm afraid I'm going to have to reject your offer. I'll be just fine," replied Brandon.
"Yes, I'll take the first flight out. I'll see you in the office on Monday," replied Brandon.
"Ok, thank you sir; bye," said Brandon.
We see Brandon packing whatever was out back into his suitcase. He called the airline to schedule a flight. After writing down the flight information, he took one last look at the hotel room and headed out.
Kelly picked up Sammy from daycare and returned home. She tried to hide from Sammy, the fact that she was crying. Sammy notices but decided to keep quiet. She went to her bedroom and shut the door. Silver notices that Kelly is home and knocks on her door.
"What?" asked Kelly.
"It's Silver. Can I come in?" asked Silver.
"Silver, I'm tired. Can this wait?" asked Kelly.
"Sure but I think you would like to know that Dylan called," said Silver.
Kelly opened the door.
"How long ago?" asked Kelly.
"About an hour. He said he'll be in town in a few hours," replied Silver.
"Oh ok; does he need me to pick him up from the airport?" asked Kelly.
"He didn't say. He just said he'll stop by as soon as possible," said Silver.
Silver notices Kelly's face.
"Are you ok?" asked Silver.
"Yeah, I'm fine," said Kelly.
"You don't look it. Have you been crying?" asked Silver.
"I just had a really emotional day, that's all," said Kelly.
"What's wrong?" asked Silver.
"Nothing. It's over now," said Kelly.
"Kel," said Silver.
"Silver, it's nothing. I'm fine. Would you help me with dinner?" asked Kelly who was trying to change the subject.
"Yeah," said Silver trying to please Kelly.
"Why don't you give a call to Brandon; tell him that Dylan's coming?" said Silver.
"I don't think that's a good idea," replied Kelly.
"Why, aren't Brandon and Dylan best friends or something?" asked Silver.
"Silver, can we just concentrate on dinner, please?" asked Kelly.
"Whatever you say," replied Silver.
A few hours later, there's a knock on the door. Kelly opens the door and sees Dylan carrying a few gifts.
"Hey Kel," said Dylan.
"Hi; come on in," said Kelly hugging Dylan.
"Thanks," said Dylan walking in.
"You look good," said Dylan looking at Kelly.
"Thanks; so do you," said Kelly looking back at Dylan.
"So where's Sammy?" asked Dylan.
"He's in his room," said Kelly.
"Sammy, your dad's here," said Kelly loudly.
"I hope he's not mad at me for cancelling before," said Dylan.
"DADDY!" said Sammy as he ran for Dylan.
"Looks like I got my answer," said Dylan as he hugged Sammy.
"I missed you. How are you?" asked Dylan.
"I'm ok. How come you didn't you come last time?" asked Sammy.
"I'm sorry, pal. But a lot of people needed my help. And if I didn't help them, they'll be very sad. You wouldn't want that, right?" asked Dylan.
"No," replied Sammy still sad.
"But I felt so bad that I got you this," said Dylan showing Sammy one of the gifts.
Sammy takes the gift box and tears the wrapping paper, revealing a new basketball.
"Wow; thanks Daddy," said Sammy as he goes to hug Dylan again.
Silver comes out of her room and sees Dylan.
"Hey there," said Silver as she goes to hug Dylan.
"Hi," said Dylan as he hugs Silver.
"How are you?" asked Silver.
"I'm good. Looks like you're looking pretty good yourself," said Dylan smiling at Silver.
"I don't suppose you brought me something too," said Silver.
"Well, I don't know young lady. You're not an easy person to shop for," said Dylan.
"But I figure you'll like this," said Dylan giving Silver the other gift.
Silver smiles and unwraps the gift, revealing a very expensive cashmere sweater.
"Oh my god! I've been saving up money to buy this; how did you know?" said Silver.
"You told me last time I was here," said Dylan.
"I can't believe you remembered. Thank you!," said Silver hugging Dylan.
"You're very welcome," said Dylan.
"Ok, Sammy, why don't you two go get clean up for dinner," said Kelly breaking the fun and merriment.
Silver and Sammy goes to the bathroom. Dylan looks at Kelly and she looks back.
"You look beautiful," said Dylan.
"Thank you," replied Kelly.
Dylan sees that Kelly is upset about something.
"Kel, I'm sorry but I didn't know what to get you," said Dylan.
"Oh, it's ok. You don't have to get anything," said Kelly.
"Hey, we can go shopping tomorrow and I'll buy you anything you want," said Dylan.
"Thanks but that's not necessary," said Kelly.
"C'mon, Kel. I said I was sorry for cancelling last time. Let me make it up to you," said Dylan.
"I'm not the one you need to make it up to," said Kelly.
"I'll have a talk with him after dinner," said Dylan looking at Kelly.
"Good," said Kelly who looks back.
Silver and Sammy comes back to the kitchen and they all sit down for dinner.
During dinner, Dylan told stories of his trips and all the places he's been over the past few months. We see Silver and Sammy laughing as they enjoy Dylan imitating all the exotic animals he encountered on his trip. Kelly joined in the fun a few times but she didn't speak much throughout dinner. Her mind was still on what happened that afternoon with Brandon. She kept on replaying the last few lines that Brandon had said to her in her mind. Listening to it the first time made it easy for her to hate Brandon. She wanted to kill him. But after a while, she saw some truth to what he said. Kelly still hated Brandon, but not really on what he said anymore but the fact that Brandon knew her too well; inside and out. She hated that even though Brandon was gone for over ten years, he still had such an effect on her. If she didn't care about him, she wouldn't still be thinking about him.
"Kel, are you ok?" said Silver as she sees Kelly not eating.
"I'm fine," said Kelly snapping back to reality.
"Look mommy," said Sammy as he's imitating one of Dylan's dolphin impressions.
"That's nice, honey," said Kelly as she faked a smile.
After dinner, we see Silver and Kelly clean up the table, while Dylan and Sammy spend some time together in Sammy's room.
"So, what were you thinking about during dinner?" asked Silver to Kelly.
"Nothing," said Kelly.
"C'mon. I'm your sister. You can tell me these things," said Silver.
"What do you think of Dylan?" asked Kelly.
"What?" replied Silver.
"You said you wanna talk about it. So let's talk about it," said Kelly.
"I dunno. Dylan's Dylan," said Silver.
"Yeah, that's what I thought," said Kelly.
"Why, are you thinking about getting together with him?" asked Silver.
"No, we tried it too many times. It doesn't work," replied Kelly.
"Then, what's the matter?" said Silver.
"I don't know. It seems that lately, I've been so lonely that I'm attracted to him again," said Kelly.
"So, he's an attractive guy. I thought you were always attracted to Dylan," said Silver.
"The fact is that it's so hard to find a guy to spend my life with that it's so easy to get attached to him again," said Kelly.
"What about Brandon? I thought you two were getting along well," said Silver.
"Shhhh...Dylan's in the next room. I don't want him to know that Brandon was here," said Kelly.
"Why? Nothing happened...did it?" asked Silver.
"Kel, did you and Brandon...?" added Silver.
"Look, that's not the point," said Kelly.
"Oh my god. When did it happen? I didn't see him here the morning after he brought you home," said Silver.
"It happened in the afternoon after you and Sammy left," said Kelly.
"Wow, Kel. I'm trust he got rid of your headache without any problems" said Silver smiling at Kelly.
"Look, it was a mistake," said Kelly giving Silver a serious look.
"Why? I thought you liked him," asked Silver.
"We're friends. That's it," said Kelly.
"Are you still in love with him?" asked Silver looking at Kelly.
"It's very complicated. Anyway, it doesn't matter now. He's probably going back to Washington soon," said Kelly.
"I guess...I mean, if he were to move here, then things may be different," said Silver.
"Yeah, things would be different," said Kelly still thinking about what Silver just said.
"Silver, could you do me a favor..." added Kelly.
"Don't worry, Kel; you're secret's safe with me," said Silver interrupting Kelly.
"Thanks," said Kelly.
"No problem, that's what I get for being too curious," said Silver.
Later that night, while Silver and Sammy are in bed, Dylan and Kelly are in the living room looking at the photos from his trips.
"And this is where we help restore the beach," said Dylan showing Kelly one of the photos.
"Looks like you guys did a great job," said Kelly.
"Well, you'll get to see how great it really is for yourself," said Dylan.
"What do you mean?" asked Kelly.
"I want you to come with me on my next trip," said Dylan.
"Dylan, I can't. I got work and Sammy's got school soon," said Kelly.
"Well work and school could wait...Kel, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity," said Dylan.
"Thanks but I just can't," said Kelly.
"Does this have anything to do with Brandon?" asked Dylan.
"What about Brandon?" asked Kelly who is surprised Dylan brought Brandon's name up.
"Sammy tells me that he was here the other night," said Dylan.
"Yeah, he was in town and we had dinner together," said Kelly.
"Dinner here?" asked Dylan.
"No, at the Peach Pit. He walked me home and I invited him in to meet Sammy," said Kelly.
"Was that all you guys did?" asked Dylan.
"Yes. What are you now, a private investigator or something?" rudely asked Kelly.
"I'm just asking, Kel," said Dylan who suspiciously looks at Kelly.
"You know, you and I are no longer together. I'm free to date whoever I want," said Kelly.
"So are you and Brandon dating?" asked Dylan.
"No, we're just friends. Why does that matter to you?" replied Kelly who is feeling really nervous.
"It doesn't but if you two were dating..."said Dylan who pauses mid sentence.
"What?" said Kelly.
"I wouldn't want him to get jealous of what I got you," said Dylan.
Dylan takes out a jewelry box and gives it to Kelly.
"What's this?" asked Kelly.
"I did get you something after all," said Dylan.
Kelly opened the box and sees a 24 Karat Gold Handmade Chain Necklace.
"It's beautiful," said Kelly looking at the necklace.
"So are you," said Dylan looking at Kelly.
Kelly looks at Dylan figures out what Dylan is trying to do.
"I know where this is going; thanks and I'm sorry, but I can't accept this," said Kelly giving the necklace back to Dylan.
"Kel, I bought the necklace for you because I thought it would look good on you," said Dylan.
"Dylan, this is more than just the necklace. You do this every time you come here. You can't just give me something and expect me to be with you," said Kelly.
"What do you want me to do?" asked Dylan.
"It's been too long to fix things," said Kelly.
"I just want what's best for our son," said Dylan.
"Then why don't you try to be a father for more than a few days?" Kelly.
"What's that suppose to mean?" asked Dylan who is getting angry.
"It means that you can't expect to make him happy by just giving him a basketball!" replied Kelly loudly.
"Sooner or later, he's gonna want more than that," added Kelly.
"What do you want me to buy him, a car?" asked Dylan.
"You don't get it, do you, Dylan?" replied Kelly.
"No, I don't Kelly. If I'm not mistaken, he seemed to be pretty happy during dinner," said Dylan.
"You don't see what I see every day when you're not here," said Kelly who starts to cry.
Dylan looks down and doesn't reply.
"He needs his father. He needs you to be there," said Kelly who is still weeping.
Dylan looks at Kelly and goes to her. Kelly cries and Dylan consoles her.
"I know. You're right," said Dylan who continues hugging Kelly.
Brandon woke up early that Monday morning in Washington D.C. He showered, shaved, and got dressed for work. After having a rough time in L.A., he didn't look mad or sad. In fact, this was the first time in a long time that Brandon knew what he wanted.
When he arrived at work, it was great to see an office full of people for once. He saw hardworking professional writers just like himself. Man, it was good to be back! He was told to go to Mr. Thomas's office immediately. And that's exactly what he did.
"Brandon, come in," said Mr. Thomas.
"Hi Mr. Thomas, it's good to see you sir," said Brandon shaking Mr. Thomas's hand.
"How was your stay in L.A.?" asked Mr. Thomas.
"It was ok. I got to visit some familiar places and had lunch with some old friends," replied Brandon.
"Oh, right. I forgot you use to live there," said Mr. Thomas.
"Yes, I did sir. But I also got a chance to look at the office too," said Brandon.
"Brandon, I know the place was a mess and I wasn't surprised by your decision," said Mr. Thomas.
"I know, sir. It was definitely a very difficult decision to make," said Brandon.
"But I knew you would make the right one. That's why we chose you," said Mr. Thomas.
"Thank you, sir. It's good to hear," said Brandon.
"We're going to miss you around here, Brandon. You've been great. Good luck," said Mr. Thomas.
"Thank you, sir," said Brandon.
"Oh before I forget...Brandon, everyone at the office wants to take you out for dinner one last time, just to say thank you," said Mr. Thomas.
"Well, I don't know what to say," said Brandon.
"Say, you'll be at "The Biestro" at 6pm tonight," said Mr. Thomas.
"I'll be there. Thanks again," said Brandon.
"Now, go on, get outta here, and enjoy your day. I'll see you later tonight," said Mr. Thomas.
"I'll see you tonight, sir," said Brandon as he walks out the door.
Brandon walks back to this desk to pack his things. His co-worker, James sees him.
"Hey Brandon; welcome back," said James.
"Thanks; I miss you, man," said Brandon.
"Same here. So how was L.A.? How was the office?" asked James.
"L.A. was ok. The office was a mess," said Brandon.
"Yeah, I heard from Thomas when you called last week," said James.
James sees Brandon putting his stuff in a box.
"You're taking the job? Are you crazy?" asked James.
"Yes, I am, James," said Brandon.
"But why? Brandon, c'mon, man. This could kill your career. How are you going to hire an entire staff and write the articles at the same time?" asked James.
"You could've just said "No", and Thomas would've kept you here," added James.
"I know but it's worth it," said Brandon as he continued packing.
"Brandon, this is not about the money," said James.
"You're right. It's not," said Brandon.
"Does she have anything to do with this?" asked James pointing to the photo on Brandon's desk.
Brandon picks up the framed photo and looks at it.
"Kinda," said Brandon.
"I understand now, my friend. Did you get to see her?" asked James.
"Yeah, we talked and stuff," replied Brandon.
"I don't know how you do it, man. Ten years in a long distance relationship? She must be some girl," said James.
"Oh, she's some girl alright," said Brandon sarcastically.
"Does she still look this good?" asked James.
"Actually, she looks even better," replied Brandon.
"Really? I wouldn't mind transferring to the L.A. office myself," joked James.
"Very funny, man," said Brandon playfully hitting James.
"What's her name, again?" asked James.
"Kelly," said Brandon.
"Well, be sure to tell Kelly for me that she's one lucky girl," said James.
"I will," said Brandon.
"I'm gonna miss working with you, man. You've helped me out a lot throughout the years," said James.
"I'll miss you too, man. Thanks for everything," said Brandon.
"So, I'll see you tonight?" asked James.
"Yeah, I'll see you tonight," said Brandon as he finishes packing.
Brandon picks up his box of personal belongings and headed out. Along the way, he said goodbye to a few of his co-workers before leaving the office for good.
Coming Next - Brandon returns to L.A. and a little get-together at Kelly's house turns out to be big trouble for everyone. Steve Sanders and Janet Sosna make guest appearances.
