Title: … who trespass against us
Rating: R, for swearing
Word Count: 217
Characters/Pairings: Debra, Harry, Dexter
Genre: character study
Prompt: "vindictive; Debra, Dexter, Harry"
Summary: "Debra's not usually vindictive, but today she curses Harry, the misdeeds of his past, and the effect they've had on his children." / Deb's feeling toward her father and brother after 4x12.
It's not that Deb would consider herself especially vindictive. She's been called forthright and callous and even occasionally bitchy, but never vindictive. Spiteful. Cruel.
But the feelings she gets with the identity of Laura Moser … she hardly recognizes herself ... or her father, for that matter.
Harrymyhero. It was her mantra in her youth. Shit, it was a mantra long after she hit puberty. Deb became a cop because of Harry. Harry my hero, Harry my – hypocrite? My impostor – the man who lived a life of masquerade in her childhood home. The man who adopted Dex if only to ease his own guilt.
She suddenly can't drown out the sound of Rudy's – No. Brian's – menacing voice and the feel of his once-welcomed fingers running through her hair. She looks at Dexter, the only constant she's ever had in her life, and finds him shell-shocked from the news she's just given him.
Debra's not usually vindictive, but today she curses Harry, the misdeeds of his past, and the effect they've had on his children.
And then, just as the blood inside her skin begins to boil, she thinks about how damn much she loved – and loves – her daddy, and the hiccups stuck in her throat turn into uncontrollable sobs.
And for it, she curses him again.
My first Dexter ficlet. Feedback would be very appreciated!
Thanks! Hope you enjoyed it!
