Author: Pirate Turner
Summary: Ezra surprises Chris, who struggles with teaching JD and Vin spelling.
Challenge: This fic was originally an attempt to answer Anneack's drabble challenge of 5-26-10, but I had misread the challenge. I didn't want to just toss the fic, however, and as there was no need to cut it down to 100 words, I left it as it stood and add just a little bit more that I'd wanted to include but would have been unable to if it were to be kept as a drabble.
Warnings: ATF LB
Word Count: 376

"A-s-s-i - "
"Hey!" JD giggled. "It's got 'ass' in it!"
"JD . . . " Chris warned, but it was too late as the boys burst out laughing. He looked balefully up at Ezra, who stood fixing a drink for himself.
Ezra glanced up as Chris looked at him, and their eyes met. A slow smile spread over the Southerner's face. "JD . . . " he called, his green eyes shifting to the boys in question.
JD immediately straightened. "Yes, Unca Ezra?"
Chris' mouth flew open, but a quick look from Ezra silenced him. JD struggled, his face scrunching up, but spelled, "P-e-r-p-e-n-d-i-c-u-l-a-r."
Chris' jaw dropped open. "How in - ?"
Ezra flashed him a smile, his gold tooth shining. He wasn't done yet! "Vin, spell 'quibble'."
Vin stayed quiet, doubt shining in his big eyes, until his uncle nodded reassuringly to him. Then he slowly began to spell. "Q-u-i-b-b-l-e."
Chris jumped to his feet, snatched his son up from his chair, and hugged him tightly. Ezra reached over and fondly ruffled the hair on both boys' heads.
"Unca Ez," JD asked, "when are ya gonna take us to McDonald's again?"
Chris quirked a single eyebrow.
"Saturday, if your fathers permit," Ezra assured the boys, both of whose faces burst open with pleased excitement.
"Can we, Da?" JD eagerly asked as Buck came into the kitchen.
"Can you what?" he responded warily. Buck had learned a long time ago that there was no telling what his son might ask him.
"Go to McDonald's with Unca Ez!" JD answered brightly.
"Can we go, Da?" Vin asked, turning begging eyes upon his father. "Pleeease?"
"On one condition," Chris spoke, his green eyes narrowing in on Ezra, "if your Uncle Ezra tells us his secret for teaching you boys."
Ezra's smile grew even brighter as he commented, "It's amazing what you can teach children with special formations of French fries. The boys are always very eager to respell the words that Ah spell first with the fries so that they may be allowed to devour them."
"Yeah!" JD beamed. "So's we can eat 'em!"
The men laughed as they smiled at the children. It was also amazing, Ezra reflected silently, how much he had come to like teaching and spending time with these two little boys.
