Thanks for all the support! I know I said I was taking a break from Bones, but this just popped in my head and demanded to written now. It's very short and random and was written in about an hour. It takes place a few months after 'The Beginning in the End.' Enjoy!
Lance Sweets sighed heavily as he scanned his ID card and entered the building. He didn't have a reason to be at the Jeffersonian, but he needed to be. So much had changed over the past few months. He'd gone from having a girlfriend, to having a fiancée, then to having no one again. And though he knew Daisy would always put her work before him, he missed her.
Truth be told, he missed lots of people.
That was the reason he found himself in the main lobby of the Jeffersonian. He retraced the steps that had once been so familiar to him, eventually coming to a stop at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the platform.
Aware that someone was watching her work, Cam glanced over her shoulder. "Doctor Sweets?" she asked, obviously surprised by his presence. "What are you doing here?"
"Hi, Doctor Saroyan," he replied, attempting to smile. "Just thought I'd stop by and see if you needed anything."
"No, I'm fine," she told him. "Everything's…" she trailed off and tilted her head, watching as Sweets shoved his hands in his pockets and rocked back on his heels. He looked like a lost, lonely little boy. "Are you okay?"
"What? Oh, yeah," he answered distractedly.
"Okay…" Cam replied reluctantly, though it didn't take a psychology degree for her to see that he was lying.
"Well, I know you're busy," Sweets sighed, glancing around the room then back up at her.
Cam offered him an apologetic look. "Yeah, I'm sorry."
"No need to apologize. It was good to see you."
"You, too, Doctor Sweets. Don't be a stranger, okay?" she said with a small smile.
"Yeah," Sweets replied noncommittally as he turned to leave.
"They're coming back," Cam called after him, the comment stopping him in his tracks. "You know that, right?"
Slowly, he faced her again. "I know. I just…"
"I miss them, too," she admitted, though her voice remained light, "but it won't be long before they'll all be back, frustrating the hell out of us."
Finally, Sweets chuckled. "Would you like to get a drink some time?"
Cam sighed and smiled. "Yes, I'd like that."
"Not like a date or anything," Sweets muttered, embarrassment creeping into his face.
"Oh, no," Cam replied quickly, shaking her head. "Didn't assume it would be. It'll be a drink between friends."
"Right," Sweets agreed, pleased that Doctor Saroyan considered him a friend. "A drink between friends."
