-a Fortune Cookie
The day had been long with preparation for upcoming WRGP, and no one felt like cooking. So they all pitched in and ordered Chinese take-out to enjoy together at the garage.
"Your dynamic eyes have attracted many secret admirers," said Jack, reading his fortune from his complimentary fortune cookie aloud. "Hmph, what nonsense." He crumbled the small paper up in his hand and tossed it into the trash.
"Gee, talk about a killjoy..." muttered Crow under his breath as he retrieved his own fortune. "Y'know they are just for fun, right Jack?" Jack seemed to ignore him, apparently more interested in his remaining food than his redheaded friend.
"What does your fortune say, Crow?" asked Ruka curiously, choosing to nibble on her fortune cookie rather than tear it in two to find the surprise inside.
"Well, uh, let's see..." Crow hesitated, unfolding the parchment to read. "Accept something that you cannot change, and you will feel better... Huh, wonder what that means?"
"Exactly what it says, idiot," replied Jack, inhaling another mouthful of soba noodles. As they began to argue, Bruno sighed and broke into his fortune cookie as well.
"We all have extraordinary coded within us, waiting to be released," he read aloud to no one in particular, although Yusei and the twins were listening to him rather than Jack and Crow's bickering. Bruno furrowed his brow and set the message down wordlessly before asking, "Yusei, what does yours say?"
Yusei's lips cracked a smile. "You have a curious smile and a mysterious nature..."
The civil portion of the group continued to take turns sharing their fortunes, although one member, Aki, seemed completely disinterested in the conversation. She absentmindedly poked at her food with her chopsticks, occasionally taking a bite every now and then, apparently deep in thought.
"Hey Aki-neechan, what about your fortune?" asked Rua excitedly, beaming at her. Aki was completely caught off guard as her head snapped up, looking like a deer caught in headlights.
"Me?" she asked, pointing to herself in surprise.
"Yeah, I wanna know what yours says!"
Aki remained silent for a moment and then picked up her fortune cookie, breaking it in half and carefully pulling out the concealed message. She saw the small text on one side, but decided to flip it over to where it was blank. Her amber eyes stared intently at the small slip of paper until something on the very edge sparked, and caught fire. The whole room suddenly fell silent, tension hanging in the air. Even Jack and Crow stopped fighting. Aki smiled wickedly, a flicker of mischief in her eyes.
"I make my own fortunes," she said. She dropped the flaming strip, and it burned for a moment longer with a purplish hue before it was reduced to nothing but a pile of ash. Aki seemed to return to normal afterward, brushing any remnants of the burnt paper off of her and picking up her chopsticks to resume her meal.
Everyone else in the room exchange quick, furtive glances before shrugging and also returning to eat.
Except Yusei. He continued to eye the young woman warily, having suddenly lost his appetite.
Yes, these are all real fortunes from fortune cookies.
