Dean's stomach was knotted in fear and rage. Sam was swathed a blue-and-white gown, bloody knuckles, mismatched eyes and posture that spoke to sore ribs.
His brother's voice quivered with brittle heat, belying the vulnerability beneath wrath. "They thought I was an easy mark, but…they weren't taking her."
The nurse entered with discharge papers. She was sunny and assuring. Dean went to the get the car. The usual gleam of the Impala was a catalyst instead of a comfort. He pounded and kicked metal, managing to dent fenders and crack a window with adrenaline and bare hands.
Because the thing that his sanctuary and safety, had nearly gotten his brother killed.
