Teacher's Pet

Chapter 57: The Aftermath

When Kagome woke up, she was in the hospital. "What?" Sesshomaru's hand was in hers on one side, and on the other side was…her mother? "Mom?"

"Hi baby!" Kagome could tell her mother had barely gotten any sleep.

"What…are you doing here?" Kagome's hand absently stroked Sesshomaru's hair.

"What do you mean?" Mrs. Higurashi frowned. She knew exactly what her daughter meant. "Kagome…I'm sorry. You and your brother have been through so much. I'm sorry that I have been neglecting you two over the years. I just feel so ashamed of how I treated your father, and before I could apologize…he was gone…" Mrs. Higurashi looked into her daughter's eyes, the eyes that reminded her so much of the love of her life. "You remind me so much of him. You and Sota, both. And I'm so sorry." She leaned and kissed Kagome's head. "I love you so much. I was so scared that I'd lost you when Sango let me know what was going on."

"Sango?" Kagome was confused. She tried to sit up but grunted in pain. She threw her head back and clenched her teeth against the pain. "What happened?"

"You got shot, Kags." Sota said, his throat tight. He'd woken up when he heard Kagome stir and he heard all of the things their mom had said about them. He stood up and hugged his mother. "Naraku shot you and then you passed out. Mom and Sango came with the cops and they burst into the place. Sesshomaru had rigged the warehouse with cameras, so everything was recorded."

"What?" Kagome was so confused. She looked at Sesshomaru, who was still sleeping at her side. "How long have I been out?"

"Couple days. You lost a lot of blood. So did Sesshomaru. But he refuses to leave your side." Sota nodded towards the silver haired demon that was in love with his sister.

"That is something that we will discuss later, young lady. You're dating your teacher?" Mrs. Higurashi narrowed her eyes at her daughter, who blushed and looked away.

"Hey! Somebody's awake!" Inuyasha yelled and burst into the room, causing Sesshomaru to jerk awake in shock.

"You're awake." He whispered, kissing Kagome with everything inside of him.

"Ahem." Mrs. Higurashi cleared her throat. "That's my underage daughter you're kissing."

Kagome blushed and pulled away from Sesshomaru.

"Well actually, age doesn't really matter to demons. S'long as she ain't a kid or anything, everything is fine." Inuyasha explained. "Since we live for so long, a lot of us often find younger partners." He shrugged.

"You set up cameras? How did you know where the warehouse was?" Kagome tilted her head to the side.

"Tsubasa. He knew where it was, having aligned himself with Naraku. He allowed me to get in and distract Hakudoshi while I set the equipment up." Sesshomaru's golden eyes pierced Kagome's.

Kagome smiled at Sesshomaru, then a thought occurred to her. "Where's Kanna?"

"She's right here." Kanna popped up from behind Inuyasha.

"Hey Kan!" Kagome said, reaching her arms out to hug her friend. "I'm so glad you're okay."

"You're glad I'm okay?! You're the one that got shot!" Kanna laughed.

"So…what happens now?" Kagome asked.

"Well Sesshomaru didn't kill Naraku, but he does have his human heart. How'd that happen?" Kanna looked at Kagome.

"I placed a spell on it. It can never again be removed from his body." Kagome said. "I didn't have time to completely purify it by the time he shot me and it was the only thing I could do." She turned to Sesshomaru. "Why didn't you kill him?"

"My only concern was you. The police came in mere moments after you passed out. Naraku is in jail, as is Kagura for the part she played in it. Byakuya is dead." He gave Kagome a look.

"I didn't actually try to kill him. I just didn't heal him." She shrugged. What about Hakudoshi?"

"He's gone. I dealt with him." Kanna stated gravely. Kagome reached her hand out to touch Kanna's.

"Naraku will and Kagura will be punished to the highest extent of youkai law." Sesshomaru continued to explain.

"What does that mean?" Kagome had a decent working knowledge of the youkai law, but some things were a mystery to her.

"They will be stripped of their powers and forced to serve as slaves to high level youkai." Sesshomaru stroked Kagome's hand. He'd almost lost her and he had never before felt fear like that in his life. If she had died…he didn't know what he would've done. "The rest of your friends are here."

The door opened and into the room spilled the rest of Kagome's friends. Sesshomaru took that as his time to step out of the hospital room, and Mrs. Higurashi followed him.

"How'd the police get there?" Kagome was still missing so much information.

"Sango told your mom what was happening. She called the cops and they sent the task force." Miroku explained.

"But that was after the arrested Ms. Kaze on her way to the warehouse. She didn't even have time to call Mr. Onigumo because they were undercover cops." Koga smirked.

"You're the best." Kagome smiled at the brown haired girl she'd known pretty much since birth.

"I know." Sango smiled back.

"How long have you been dating my daughter?" Mrs. Higurashi asked outside of the hospital room. She had to admit that Kagome had great taste in men. The tall man before her was incredibly intimidating, but she couldn't deny that he was attractive.

"Almost the entire school year. There was a period that we were not together and she dated the bear demon I mentioned earlier." Sesshomaru told her.

"Why is that?" Mrs. Higurashi was curious about the demon that was obviously devoted to her daughter.

"There was a miscommunication, completely my fault. I should have trusted Kagome not to be like a lot of other humans I know that have gotten romantically involved with demons." Sesshomaru was still frustrated with himself.

"What do you mean?"

"She thought I'd cheated on her. It broke her heart. She refused to deal with me on even the simplest of terms." Sesshomaru watched Kagome's mother's reaction. Of course he knew how her infidelity tore both her marriage and Kagome apart.

Mrs. Higurashi looked at the ground. "Yeah. She gets her cold shoulder from me. But you explained yourself and she let you right back in, I'm assuming?" Sesshomaru nodded. "She gets that from her father. Ken was a very forgiving man. Even on his death bed, he told me that he still loved me. He told me to watch over them." She sighed. "I haven't done a very good job of that, have I?"

Sesshomaru shook his head. "Kagome and Sota both love you very much. They are strong and have made it this far. But, as you have said, they are much like their father. They have forgiven you already."

Mrs. Higurashi smiled. "I'm not surprised that my daughter is in love with you. You temper her nicely." They walked back into the hospital room with Kagome and her friends. "I'm still not okay with her dating her teacher, though."

"That won't be a problem. Sesshomaru won't be teaching at the school anymore." Kagome said.

"Huh? Why?" Sango was confused.

"Well I told Principal Higotomi everything. From me and Sesshomaru to Naraku being a psycho. He basically said what Inuyasha said. There's no law against demons dating younger people, as long as they're of a higher mental capacity, and at least sixteen. The only problem was that it was frowned upon that Sesshomaru was dating his student." Kagome shrugged and winced slightly. "Sorry, Sess."

"It matters not. I was offered a professor position at Tokyo University. I was planning on starting there your senior year, anyway." Sesshomaru said.

"Oh that's great!" Kagome beamed.

"Congrats, Mr. Taisho." Sango cheered, with the rest of her friends.

There was a weak knock at the door. Kagome frowned when she felt the aura of the person outside.

"Be calm, miko. He helped me." Sesshomaru said.

"I don't care. He put my little brother in danger." Kagome sighed and rolled her eyes. "Come in."

Tsubasa sheepishly entered the room and was met with glares all around. "I owe all of you and apology. Especially you two, Sota and Kagome. I put you in danger because I was so blinded by my love for your sister."

Kagome rolled her eyes again. "You don't love me. You don't do that to a person you love. What you feel is an infatuation, borderline obsession for what you did. You're still going to have to pay. You lied to the principal, so that means you're at the very least expelled. You weren't directly involved with Sota's kidnapping, so there's no way I can make you pay for that."

"Uh…I think you already did, Kags." Inuyasha said, pulling the collar of Tsubasa's shirt down and showing Kagome the bruises that she'd left.

Kagome couldn't bring herself to feel bad for what she'd done to Tsubasa. "As long as I never have to see you again, then I'm fine."

"I'm really sorry, Kagome. And I'm sorry Sota." Tsubasa said sadly.

Kagome sighed. "Look, you're not a bad person. I would suggest mental help, though."

He nodded. "Principal Higotomi already set some things up for me. I won't bother any of you anymore." He left the room and it seemed like the air got lighter.

"He's really not a bad guy. Just a little mixed up in the head." Sango said.

"Yeah. Anyway, Sess, when do you start at Tokyo U?" Kagome asked.

"I will start in the fall." He answered.

There was another knock on the door. "Hello everyone. I'm sorry, but visiting hours are over. Only family is allowed here now." The nurse walked over to Kagome's IVs and refilled the one that supplied her morphine.

"Awww. See ya, Kags. Hurry up and get better." Koga squeezed Kagome's shoulder, too scared to hug her with the possessive inuyoukai standing at her head.

"Yeah. What Koga said." Ayame smiled and leaned in to hug Kagome.

"I'll try." Kagome smiled back at her friends.

"Kagome, I'm super pissed at you for getting shot. That scared the hell outta me. Seeing you in the ambulance…" Sango shook her head and hit her best friend on the arm. "Don't scare me like that again!" She huffed.

Kagome smiled wider. "I promise I won't ever scare you like that again, Sango." She grunted as she leaned up to hug Sango tightly. "Thank you, Sango. All of you, thank you for not running away."

"Eh. It's whatever." Koga shrugged, knowing that he and Ayame were the ones reluctant to help.

Kagome felt herself getting drowsy as the medicine started to kick in and her friends started to file out. Sota left out with Kohaku and Sango. "Ya know, Yash, you and Kanna would make a great couple. Just get on with it already." She slurred slowly.

The two blushed furiously and looked away from each other.

"Oh stop it. You two like each other. You're damn near dating already. Oh Sesshy aren't they cute to-get-her?" She smiled dreamily.

"Feh. You're super drugged up. We'll leave you alone." Inuyasha said and left the room with Kanna right behind him.

"I have a phone call to take, but I will be back." Mrs. Higurashi said.

Kagome shook her head slowly. "Go home, mom. Sess will stay here with me tonight. Right, Sessy?" She looked at Sesshomaru, who smiled and nodded.

"I will be back in the morning. You're going to be released tomorrow." Mrs. Higurashi kissed her daughter on the head and left the room. She vowed that she would be a better mother to her children. Somewhere in the afterlife, a blue eyed man looked down on his family and smiled. 'Finally.' He thought. Things with the family that he'd left behind would finally be right.

"I love you so much, my Sessy puppy." Kagome's words were becoming slower. "Come hold me."

Sesshomaru didn't bother correcting her. He simply slid into the hospital bed with her, careful not to jostle her too much, and cradle her to his chest. "I love you as well."

"We're gonna be together forever and ever and everrrrr…" She drifted off to sleep.

They'd never discussed where their relationship was going, but he knew that he would never love another woman the way that he loved her. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, if she was willing. His only problem was…was this something that she was too young for? Demons mated for life, and he didn't want to take the choice to fall in love with someone else away from her. After all she still had another year of high school, four years of college, and whatever she wanted to do afterwards. He didn't think that he could do that to the woman that he loved, but he didn't want to let her go, either. What was an inuyoukai to do?

Hey guys!

We're not done yet! Just because Naraku is out of the way doesn't mean the crew is home free!
