Sophisticated and cosmopolitan weren't words Della Street would use to describe herself but she wasn't a naïve teenager either. She felt she had a more than average level of what her mother called 'life experiences' for a young woman her age.
So it wasn't as though she had never seen one before.
Just not one in this condition.
She also usually knew in advance when she would be seeing one.
