The inhabitants of Hogwarts castle had long retired to their dormitories after stuffing themselves with the luxuries offered at the Welcoming Feast. Wide eyed First Years were ushered off to bed by the intimidating Seventh Years who took their normal spot among the common rooms. The First Years spoke in hushed tones, still in awe of their surroundings. They were too much in shock to notice two missing from their number.

Stuck beneath an alcove, hidden by a large tapestry on the second floor, was a tiny red and wild haired girl with a bag as large as herself. Her frightened and horribly lost eyes peeked through the tapestry to the staircases, trying to find the correct passage to the Gryffindor common room. Caught up in utter despair, she sat down in one corner, gripping her wand and schoolbag tightly. Checking her watch, she discovered it was near after two in the morning. She decided to wait until morning and hoped one of her cousins found her soon.

Scorpius Malfoy couldn't sleep. This castle, his home for the year, was disconcerting. He felt withdrawn—a normal feeling, of course, for most First Years. He reached a large tapestry on the second floor depicting the Great Battle, wondering if he could rest behind it after spending nearly three hours roaming. He supposed it'd be alright, as long as there wasn't another ghost there to report him to the caretaker. He'd heard enough bad stories from his father.

Rose Weasley had been sadly munching on a large chocolate bar when she started abruptly as she saw someone hesitantly pull back the tapestry. She hoped with all her heart that if it was a teacher, it was her Uncle Neville. She stiffened when she saw it was a tall, pale haired boy with startling blue gray eyes. From his lost expression, she assumed that he, too, was a First Year. She noticed the Slytherin badge on his robes. His face looked vaguely familiar.

They stared uncomfortably at each other.

"Er. Hi," he finally said.

She nodded in response, shifting uncomfortably. She saw his face brighten slightly, as though he'd just realized something.

"Can I have a piece of that?" he asked nervously, fidgeting with his robes. He pointed to the huge bar of Honeydukes chocolate.

"Do I know you?" she asked haughtily.

"Well," he said earnestly, "Not exactly, but my grandmother always says that before doing something thoughtful, always have something sweet."

He grinned.

Rose stared at him and sighed, breaking off a large slab and holding it out to him.

"Thanks!" he said, sitting down next to her.

They sat nibbling in silence. Rose edged slightly away from him, wanting to get away from the incredibly weird First Year. He didn't seem to notice, just peeked at her shyly, when he thought she wasn't looking.

"By the way," Rose said tentatively, "What 'thoughtful' thing are you going to do?"

He smiled sheepishly, "I thought I'd help you find your way back to your dormitory."

She blushed.

"I'm Scorpius," he offered, holding out his hand.

"Rose," she said, accepting it.
