A/N: Here's my entry for Roxypony's Surprise Songfic Challenge! So, I started writing this, and realised that I'm terrible at songfics... but I stuck with it and lo and behold, here is what I managed to come up with. The song is Fighter by Christina Aguilera. Lyrics are in italic. Ermm, I think that's it. Enjoy!
Disclaimer: Go find someone else's to read. The same will apply for me.
The mountain and its inhabitants were already wide awake when Arra left her room and started off slowly for the Hall of Games. People, as usual, gave her looks but tonight she ignored them, too absorbed in her own thoughts. During the day, a sudden, revolutionary thought had come to her and she was in no hurry to let it fade away.
It was a year ago tonight that Larten had left. For that year, the once fiery Arra Sails had been sullen and quiet, hardly speaking, hardly eating, and she hadn't been near the Sports Halls.
But something had changed. The fact that it had been a whole year and nobody had heard anything from Larten had made Arra realise that she couldn't go on like this. Like some stupid human, she thought with a grin as she turned a corner.
She didn't hate Larten for leaving, not at all. She understood his reasons, even secretly agreed with a few of them, though she would never admit. For the past year, it had seemed easier to be reclusive and dismissive of everything. But now she wasn't so sure. She definitely had the ability to be herself again, but up until now she hadn't been able to muster the enthusiasm to do so.
'Cause if it wasn't for all that you tried to do
I wouldn't know just how capable I am to pull through
So I wanna say thank you
Of course, Larten's leaving had hurt her a great deal, and to begin with she hadn't coped well at all. But over the past few months she hadn't felt like bursting into tears at the very mention of his name, and had become more and more willing to go around the mountain (with Gavner at her side, half for protection, half to put his worried mind at rest).
Slowly, very slowly, Arra wasn't just becoming herself again, but a new, changed version of herself. And she owed it to Larten. 'Cause it makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder
It makes me that much wiser
So thanks for making me a fighter
'Cause it makes me that much stronger
Arra was only just realising how much his leaving had, in a strange way, benefitted her. She felt stronger – both emotionally and mentally. She felt more focused on her work, more willing to do whatever she was asked to do. And, as she walked slowly into one of the great Sports Halls, she realised that people were a lot more complicated than she first thought.
The Hall was full of Vampires, fighting and battling, but beneath that they could have been feeling anything. The thought made her look at them all differently, and she felt a sudden wave of cynicism wash over her.
But that still didn't stop her from picking up a staff and jumping up onto the bars, much to the surprise of the other Vampires.
She decided she could either spend the rest of her life in miserable solitude, or she could face the world with a cocky grin and a cynical attitude.
And as Arra knocked two Vampires off the bars and faced three more, she grinned, deciding that negativity was better than reclusive.
A/N: I know it isn't very long, I apologise for that, but it's a story with part of a song in it – therefore, a songfic, of sorts...I know it doesn't really make much sense, but I kinda got stuck...please review with your thoughts though!
