"Graduation wasn't any fun without you." Tomari said softly. "You were all I could think about, Hazumu." There was no reply.
"I'm sorry it took me so long to come see you." She said awkwardly, shoving her hands deep into the pockets of her coat. "I didn't want to face you. Are you mad at me?"
"Did you know? Asuta proposed to Ayuki last month. They're getting married next year. On your birthday." Tomari smiled . "I never saw it coming, did you? Apparently they started dating when Ayuki came back from the university."
Tomari fell silent, but did not receive any signal that she had been heard.
"Yasuna went to America, after all. She said without you, she had no reason to stay. But she still emails me every now and then. You know, she came to see you every day before she left. Would always ask if I wanted to come. But I never did." Tomari reached up to fuss with her scarf.
"Speaking of which, Jan Puu wanted to come today, too. But I figured I should come alone this time. Because I didn't know if you were angry at me. I promised I'd take her Sunday, anyway."
There was a slight breeze, and Tomari shivered. "I met someone."
She could have sworn the answering silence was shocked. If that were possible.
"I think you'd like him. He's really nice, Hazumu, and he cares about me." Tomari laughed once, her eyes unusually shiny. "He's great with my brother, and my parents love him. He knows all about you and me, but he still likes me. He confessed to me the other day, and we're going out tomorrow."
One tear slipped from the corner of her eye, and suddenly she was sobbing. "I can't stop thinking about you. It's not fair. I can't stop loving you, Hazumu, even though it hurts too much."
Tomari's knees weakened, and she sank to the ground. "Why did you leave me?" She cried.
Hazumu's grave did not respond.
Takes place about 5 years post-series, if Hazumu had died.
