A/N: I'm back again, I know two posts in one night! That's more than one post a year I've been averaging I must be going crazy…er. Anyway, this is the first part of a series, sort of. I've got the future parts of it written up in hard copy but nothing else typed up. Anyway if enough people like it I might be motivated to type…
Beta'd by Miss Whovian (as always.)
Ianto sniffled, pushing himself further into his corner; he really hated those other kids.
"Want to play?" A pudgy hand pushed its way into his vision. Ianto lifted his head, using his sleeve as a tissue.
"I'm Jack," the boy in front of him continued, introducing himself. His black hair hung down over his forehead, partially obscuring his bright blue eyes. He looked five or six, about the same age as Ianto.
"Go away; no one wants to play with the freak." Ianto buried his head back into his folded arms.
"You don't look like a freak to me." Ianto looked up again. The boy - Jack - was smiling at him. "… and I know what freaks look like."
"What do they look like then?"
"Little brothers of course." Jack scrunched up his face making Ianto laugh. Jack offered his hand again and Ianto took it.
"I'm Jones, Ianto Jones," he introduced himself like his mothers had taught him to.
Jack pulled him to his feet. "I bet you can't beat me to that wall."
"Jack, who's this?"
"Ianto Jones." Jack pulled Ianto closer to his mom. The slight boy next to her son ducked his head, a blush creeping across his face.
"Hello," he greeted with voice a whisper, and stuck his hand out. "Nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too, Ianto." She crouched down to their level and shook his hand. "Is someone coming to pick you up?"
"Ianto's coming home with us!" Jack interjected. "We're going to play games and eat nice things."
"Is he now? I think someone might have something to say about that." Carlyn stood up to greet the lady hurrying towards her. "I assume this one's yours?"
"Yes, thanks," she scooped Ianto up and rested him on her hip before addressing him. "What have I told you about wandering away from the pick up area?"
"Sorry about that, I think mine led him astray," she grabbed Jack as he tried to make a run for freedom and velcroed on his harness and leash; "I'm Carlyn by the way. This little bandit is Jack."
"Maddi… and I assume you've met Ianto."
They continued chatting. Ianto wriggled out of his mother's grasp and sat on the gravel with Jack.
"Oh, great oceans, look at the time, we've got to get moving Jack, nice to meet you guys!"
She rolled her eyes at Jack's pout and continued. "Not today - Ianto can come over another time. We've got to get going, come on."
Jack pushed himself up but kept pouting.
"Please yourself," his mother said, "say goodbye."
"Bye Ianto, bye Ianto's mom." Jack waved. Ianto waved back shyly until Jack and Carlyn turned the corner out of sight.
Maddi picked Ianto up again. "So, did you have fun today?"
Ianto nodded, sticking his thumb in his mouth. He was quiet for a while as they walked home; suddenly he pulled his thumb out of his mouth.
"Why does Jack say 'Mum' funny?"
A/N2: I really hate typing 'mom', it feels like I've abused the English language.
