Cholo met his best friend, Jodi's, eyes. Jodi had lost her mother and he had lost his father. They had grown up together all their lives. They'd always been there for one another. Now, Jodi's father, Jovan, was going to be remarried. Maita was Jovan's new love. She would be bringing with her her two children from her previous marriage, Tristan and Eunice.
"Do you think we'll always be friends?" he asked her, hoping that he was right about what she would say, hoping that Maita and her children wouldn't change anything.
"Always," Jodi replied. "Even when we're old and grey, Cholo, we'll still be best friends, even then. Nothing in the world could ever change that."
"Except for us," Cholo said.
Jodi nodded. That was right, and that would never, ever happen.
"Jodi," Cholo said.
"I love you."
Jodi smiled. "I love you, too, Cholo. You're my best friend, and I'm so lucky to have you-"
"No," he disagreed, "I'm the one who's lucky."
Jodi swatted playfully at his arm. "Don't be silly, Cholo! You're a wonderful person. I can't imagine who in the world wouldn't want to be your friend."
"Lots of people," he intoned.
"Stop that," she said. "Come on, smile."
He smiled, but only for her.
"There, see," she told him. "Nobody could say no to that smile."
He stared at her for a moment, deadly serious, but she also appeared to be serious, and he started to laugh.
She laughed too, after a moment, and he thought it was the best sound in the whole world, possibly the whole of everything. He really did love Jodi, even if she only thought he loved her as a friend. And he was going to find a way to make her see that and love him back. One day, he thought, they would be happily married. One day, nobody would ever even think about pulling them apart. They would always be together, even when they were old and grey, just like Jodi had promised. And they would still be happy then.
