To Understand What Is To Come, Book One-Chapter 1
This is set a few weeks after the incident at the ballet studio.
In the beginning of August, just before the start of Alice, Edward and Bella's senior year, Alice suddenly flew from her seat. Bella, who was sitting next to Edward, hearing him play her lullaby, looked up at the sudden movement. Alice's eyes glazed over and once they were back to normal, she started to jump up and down, squealing at the top of her lungs, making Bella cover her ears.
Jasper walked into the room and Rosalie and Emmett wandered to the banister, wondering what was going on with Alice. Carlisle and Esme, who were talking in his study, walked out and looked at her, speculatively.
Alice walked to the door and opened. Outside, sitting on the floor, was a cardboard box. Alice lifted the box and brought inside, placing it on the coffee table. Edward stood up, winding an arm around Bella's waist, and walked over to the coffee table.
"What are these?" Edward asked, watching Alice open the box.
Rosalie and Emmett walked down the stairs slowly to get a better view.
"They're books." Alice said and that was all she was going to say.
"Did you order them, Alice?" Bella asked. Sometimes she truly felt like she was part of this family. There were people in this family like, Emmett, Alice and Esme, who made her feel like she was part of them.
Alice frowned. "No, I didn't. There's no return address either."
Rosalie said nothing but kept her hand interlocked with Emmett's. The anger that she had held for Bella had gradually decreased. She could see that Bella was absolutely crazy about Edward and she knew that if she was faced with that ultimatum, Bella would easily choose Edward's life over her own. And she knew that would be impossible for Edward to live without Bella. She had seen what the human had down to Edward after coming to Forks and she compared it to what he was like before she walked in to his life, and she saw a major difference. This clumsy human had changed her brother for the better.
A part of her still didn't like her for two things. One, she was scared that Bella would blow their secret and two, she was annoyed that Bella would be so willing to become one of them. If she was in Bella's place, she wouldn't want to become one of us, she would want to stay human. She would want to be able to get married, have kids, watch them grow up, spoil their kids and grow old with her husband, and then, finally, die.
"What are they about?" Edward asked.
"Let me read the summary." Alice said. She picked a book with a picture of a blood soaked, white flower on the front cover.
For Bella Swan-
"Wait, Bella Swan? Is this about me?" Bella asked. The arm that was around her waist tightened automatically.
Edward was frozen and wasn't able to say anything. Is this about us? He thought.
Alice didn't say anything, but continued to read the summary.
-there is one thing more important than life itself. Edward Cullen.
Bella looked at Edward, who was still frozen. For some reason, she seemed to think that this book would tell the future.
But being in love with a vampire is even more dangerous than Bella could ever have imagined. Edward has already rescued Bella from the clutches of one evil vampire-
At the mention of James, Edward's still demeanour changed. His nostrils flared and he growled low in his chest. Instinctively, he pulled Bellla to his side. He buried his face in her strawberry scented hair to calm down.
-but now, as their daring relationship threatens all that is near and dear to them, they realise their troubles may be just beginning...
"So, this book tells the future?" Bella asked.
"Alice, can you see anything?" Edward asked.
Alice shifted through her visions, but the only thing that she could see was the entire family reading the book.
Alcie shook her head. "I can't see anything. I ahve no idea what happens in the book. All I can see is that we sit here reading all four of them."
Bella peered into the box. "Wait, there's a letter in here!"
Alice pulled out the letter.
Dear Bella and Edward,
I know this must be strange to find books that you never ordered, but believe me when I say this, these books are important! Things that happen in these books must be changed otherwise they will only cause more and more heartache for you both. Within the box are four books. New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn and Midnight Sun. The order is New Moon, Eclipse and then, Breaking Dawn. I suggest that the two of you read Midnight Sun by yourselves, but read the other three with your family. Sadly, Midnight Sun isn't completed, even though it has already happened, it is something worth reading as it will answer some of your questions, Bella.
"So this book tells us our future..." Bella said. This all seemed so unreal to her.
"Shall we start?" Alice suggested.
Rosalie, Emmett, Jasper, Alice, Carlisle, Esme, Bella and Edward walked into the dining room and each took a seat.
"Who wants to start?" Bella asked.
"I think I'll start." Carlisle said.
I felt like I was trapped in one of those terrifying nightmares, the one where you have to run, run till your lungs burst, but you can't make your body move fast enough.
"Those types of dreams are really annoying." Bella sighed.
"It sounds like you're not going to make it, wherever it is you're running to." Emmett said.
Rosalie smacked him upside the head.
My legs seemed to move slower and slower as I fought my way through the callous crowd, but the hands on the huge clock tower didn't slow.
"Isn't there a clock tower in Volterra?" Jasper asked.
Edward's eyes widened as pulled Bella from her seat and placed her on his lap, hugging her tightly.
With relentless, uncaring force, they turned inexorably toward the end- the end of everything. But this was no dream, and, unlike the nightmare, I wasn't running for my life; I was racing to save something infinitely more precious. My own life meant little to me today.
"Why do I feel that I am the reason that you are in Volterra?" Edward asked, his voice still muffled by her hair.
Bella frowned and turned in his lap, facing him. "What? What's so bad about Volterra?"
But Edward kept quiet.
Alice had said there was a good chance that we would both die here.
"Alice!" Edward hissed.
Jasper flinched and his head flew back with a silent scream of pain. The thought of Alice dying was too much for him to bear. Alice caught a hold of his hand and began to rub small circles on his palm.
"Shh, I'm right here, Jazz and I'm not going anywhere." Alice whispered, leaning her head on his shoulder, throwing as much love and comfort to him as possible.
Perhaps the outcome would be different if she weren't trapped by the brilliant sunlight; only I was free to run across this bright, crowded square.
And I couldn't run fast enough.
So it didn't matter to me that we were surrounded by our extraordinarily dangerous enemies. As the clock began to toll out the hour, vibrating under the soles of my sluggish feet, I knew I was too late- and I was glad something bloodthirsty waited in the wings.
"The Volturi!" Edward hissed so quietly and quickly that Bella wouldn't be able to here.
For in failing at this, I forfeited any desire to live.
"Edward! What have you done!" Esme cried.
Everyone knew that if Bella was willing to die if it came to that by running towards something, it had to be because of Edward. The entire family glared at him, while a fearful Bella clutched onto his shirt, desperately.
The clock tolled again, and the sun beat down from the exact centre point of the sky.
Silence filled the room. Everyone knew that something bad was going to happen in these books and somehow they concerned this entire family.
"Should we go on?" Carlisle asked.
Everyone nodded. "I think we should go on. If something bad does happen in these books, at least we can change it for the better." Esme said quietly.
Here's the first chapter. Hope you like it. Read and Review!
