The boy was a mistake, but she loved and forgave him anyway. It wasn't his fault.
Rachel smiled down at the slumbering youth tucked underneath the sheets. Nigel would probably playfully scold her for babying the boy so much, but he would have to deal with it. Brian tended to get so shaken up during a thunderstorm. She would hold his hand as she walked him to his leaf green bedspread, would read him his favorite story with the funny voice until he calmed down, would rub small patterns in his curly red locks so dozing off would be that much easier for him. She would do all these things because he wanted her to. He wanted his mommy to do those things. And she was his mommy. She was now.
As it should be.
Rachel frowned sadly as she made sure the toddler was tucked in. She just pitied him sometimes. It was unfair to him. Unfair how he loved Fanny and Patton only for them to get caught in that terrible accident. The blonde truly felt sorry when the child found out his parents died because of some failed break system. But that was how the cookie crumbled sometimes. Still, even with that tragedy, she rested easy knowing he would come back home with her after everything was settled. Now here he was, under her loving care. As it should be. Custody was simple enough.
Especially since Nigel was his biological father.
Brian's light snore brought her out of her musings, and she smiled forlornly at the boy. He would be fine the rest of the night now. Rachel stood to leave and lightly tiptoed to the door, looking back towards Brian once more. The pitiful frown returned, and she couldn't help but shake her head a bit. The woman couldn't help it. But everything was fine, Nigel was his father and she was his mother now. But she wasn't his blood mother, and that was a mistake.
He was a mistake.
But as said before, she forgave him for it. It wasn't his fault she was only his step-mother. Just like it wasn't Nigel's fault for being confused during a rough patch in their marriage. Just like it wasn't Patton's fault being a victim of circumstance. No, it wasn't any of their faults. And being the kind, loving mother she was, Rachel forgave them all.
It was just Fanny she couldn't forgive. But she had taken care of that. She had taken care of everything. Now she was the only woman Nigel had his eyes own, and Brian saw her as his true 'mommy' now.
As it should be.
Happy Late Halloween…or something like that. Lament of Innocence ain't done yet, so this came up.
