She's been dreaming and not sleeping, on a road not meant for traveling. They'd been out on a seemingly routine case investigating a victim who had been found in a locked room, with no windows open. She appeared to have died from blood loss, but there were no puncture wounds. They'd been about to head back to the town morgue when Scully had been attacked from behind.
Mulder had reacted purely on instinct and, with just one shot, put a bullet in her attacker's head, but he was a split second too late. Rushing to Scully, he cradled her in his arms while calling for help, not willing to release her unconscious form until the EMTs got there.

Almost a year to the day, Scully gave birth to Daniel and Katherine, their miracle babies. Born just two minutes apart, they were the apple of their parents' eyes. They brought constant joy to their lives.
Mulder sat down beside Scully's hospital bed and took her hand in his, lightly caressing her wedding band. It had been two weeks now and he was losing hope, but he knew he couldn't give up. He knew she wouldn't. "Come back to me, Scully," he whispered. "I need you. Danny and Katie need you."
Somewhere in her dream-filled haze, she heard his desperate plea. And opened her eyes.
