Kate ran a hand over the back of the old rocking chair and smiled. She sat down and slowly began rocking. Her mom had rocked her in this chair. And her grandmother had rocked her mom in it. She placed a hand on her still-flat stomach and closed her eyes.
From the doorway, the scene made the two men in her life smile. "I haven't seen her this happy in a long time," her father told Rick softly.
"For the first time since I've known her, she has everything she has ever wanted," Rick told the other man. "She hasn't said anything, but I think she really wants a little girl."
Jim smiled. "I'm not surprised. She has a job that still is a 'boys club', but Katie has always been very feminine. She always loved playing with dolls and going shopping with her mother. She has some very fond memories of those moments. It's no surprise that she'd want to make similar memories with her own daughter."
"She's going to be a wonderful mother," Rick declared, tenderly watching his wife.
"Yes, she is. Are you ready to do it again?" Jim laughed.
Rick chuckled. "I am."
"What are you two plotting over there?" Kate asked, eyes still closed.
"How does she do that?" Jim asked as they crossed the room to join her.
Rick shook his head. "I have no idea, but this child won't get away with anything," he laughed.
"You do know I can hear you, right?" she asked.
He held up his hands in surrender.
Her father grinned and decided a change of subject was in order. "Katie, I want you to have this chair," he told, indicating the chair she was rising from.
"Dad, are you sure?"
He nodded. "I'm sure. It's what your mom would have wanted."
Kate threw her arms around her father. "Thank you," she whispered, too overcome with emotion to say anything more.
Jim held her close for a moment before kissing her cheek. "I love you, Katie," he murmured. "You're going to be a wonderful mother."
Pulling back, he looked from Kate to Rick. "Come on, let's go get some dinner. I'm starving."
Kate slipped her hand in Rick's as they followed him out the door.
