Castle watched Beckett from across the room, marveling at the change she'd made in his life. Before he'd met her, he'd never really been in a serious relationship. Even when he'd been married, it hadn't really felt serious. Then he'd met Kate Beckett and everything had changed.
She didn't let him get away with anything. In years past, when something was bothering him, he'd just shrug it off and tell everyone he was fine when he wasn't. She made him tell her what was wrong, made him get it out in the open. She had this uncanny ability to tell exactly when something was wrong.
He didn't know when it had happened, but somewhere along the way he'd fallen in love with her. She was stubborn as hell and didn't give in when she knew she was right. She was also the most compassionate person he'd ever met. It made for a striking combination.
He knew she could do so much better, but she saw something in him that no one else ever had. She saw his heart. And she'd claimed it for her own.
"What are you thinking about?" she asked, sitting down beside him.
He smiled and pushed a piece of hair that had fallen behind her ear. "You."
She looked at him with that tender smile she reserved just for him. "I love you so much," she told him softly.
"Almost as much as I love you," he whispered before he touched his lips to hers in a gentle kiss.
