Kate opened up an old shoe box and reached inside, almost afraid of what she'd find. Knowing her husband, it could be anything-and she did mean anything. That man kept the oddest assortment of things. She'd once found a king of hearts playing card next to the larger half of a wishbone. He'd had some insane story about placing a bet on who would get the larger half. It was then that some things she just didn't need to know about.
When she pulled her hand out of the shoe box, she was surprised to discover a photograph. Upon closer inspection, she noticed it was of Martha and Rick when he was just a little boy; he couldn't have been more than 6-years-old when it was taken.
"What are you up to?" Rick asked softly as he sat down beside her on the sofa.
She showed him the picture. "I found this in the back of a closet."
He took the picture from her, smiling. "That was a long time ago. I remember that day. It had snowed three feet in less than an hour. All of New York was snowed in. Nobody could get in or out. Mother asked if I wanted to build a snowman with her," he remembered.
Kate smiled, not saying a word, just letting him tell his story.
"So we spent the afternoon outside, building not just one snowman, but several. It ended up being a whole snow village," he laughed.
"Sounds like you had a good time," she commented.
"It's still one of my favorite memories. After we came back inside, she made us hot cocoa and we watched movies until it was time for bed."
Kate took the photo from him. "Tomorrow we'll have a larger one made and put it in a frame."
The smile he gave her told her more than any words he could have spoken. She'd touched something deep inside of him, something that few people had the ability to do. "I love you," he whispered, kissing her gently.
She smiled. "I love you, too."
