Mulder watched his wife holding their three-year-old daughter. It was only the second day in a two-week intensive chemotherapy regimen for Katie. She was a very sick little girl. They'd caught her leukemia early, so her doctors were hopeful that she'd respond well to the chemo.
He'd been strong for Katie and Scully all morning, but when Katie had fallen asleep, he'd slipped out of the room and found a quiet spot. As he thought about what the foreseeable future held for their little girl, the tears began to fall. They were silent at first, but soon he was sobbing. It wasn't long before he felt a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Mulder," Scully whispered as she sat down beside him.
He quickly tried to compose himself, but she halted his movements. "Don't," she told him. "Don't hide how you're feeling."
"Scully-" he started, but she cut him off with a single finger to his lips.
"Please. I need to know I'm not the only one feeling this way."
"Feeling what way?" he asked carefully.
"Like my world just fell apart," she told him brokenly. "Like someone tore out my heart and stomped on it."
And with those words, she broke down in his arms. It wasn't long before his own tears mixed with hers. As they sat there wrapped in each other's arms, the world around them continued to turn, unaware that their world had been turned upside down. When they regained their composure, Scully slipped her hand in Mulder's and they made the short journey back to Katie's hospital room, where she still slept soundly, unaware that she was fighting for her life.
In the days and weeks that followed, many more changes would take place, but one thing remained the same: their love for each other and their little girl.
