"Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now..."
"Airplanes," B.o.B. ft. Hayley Williams

The stars are bright tonight; a memory stirs deep within her: lying on the roof of the old Tohomiko house, listening to her mother talk of the power of stars.

"If ever there is a time you feel lost, ask the stars for guidance. They will help you," Aiko Tohomiko had whispered fervently.

Curling up against a tree, her world collapsing around her, Kimiko wishes desperately to believe her. Mere hours ago, she had asked Master Fung, 'What now?' and the only response had been, 'There is nothing we can do. He is gone.'

It is not what Kimiko wants to hear, and she despises Raimundo Pedrosa for crashing into her life like a hurricane, and forcing her to trust him, only to walk away so easily.

Forcing down tears, she is left facing that unanswerable question: What now?

And, because she seems to have no other ideas, she looks up and whispers one word over and over until it has lost practically all meaning: "Please, please, pleaseā€¦"

It won't help; she knows this. It couldn't save her mother's life, and it won't bring Raimundo back to them.

Really, they're probably just airplanes, anyway.

(She is fourteen years old and she saves the world on a daily basis; sometimes, she thinks she is too exhausted to continue existing.)

She begs the stars to prove her wrong.
