She watched from the corner as he sat on the sofa as tears fell silently down his face. Her heart broke at the pain she saw etched there. When his tears grew in intensity, she could no longer keep her presence hidden. She quickly made her way to his side. She sat down beside him and wrapped her arms around him.
"I'm here, Angel," she whispered as her own tears mixed with his. "I'm here."
"Cordy?" he asked, surprised.
"It's me," she told him.
"The Powers sent me home," she told him simply.
"For how long?"
"For good. I'm never leaving you again."
Angel pulled her into his arms and held her tight. "I missed you so much," he whispered.
"I missed you, too." She pulled away slightly to look him in the eye. "I love you, Angel."
"You don't know how long I've dreamed of hearing those words," he smiled. "I love you so much, Cordy."
She smiled gently and pressed her lips to his. "Oh, and Angel?" she told him when they pulled apart?
"Your soul is permanent now. The Powers send their thanks."
She nodded. "Yes." She waited as he took in this new information.
His eyes lit up. He stood up and took her hand in his as they made their way up to room 217, where they shut out the rest of the world for what remained of the day, thankful that sometimes things did work out. Maybe not the way they expected, but they did eventually work out. Sometimes even better than they could ever have dreamed of. In the end, they got the one thing neither would have ever thought possible. A semi-normal life. With each other. And for them, it was all they could ask for.
