Castle pulled Beckett to her feet. "Dance with me," he told her softly as the first few notes of I Love the Way You Love Me began playing. She smiled for perhaps the first time that day. It was the anniversary of her mother's murder; it was never an easy day. She'd been quiet most of the day. She'd known he would notice, but he hadn't said a word about it all day.
"I'm sorry," he finally whispered.
She looked up at him, a question shining in her eyes. "For what?"
He smiled gently. "I'm sorry you have to remember the worst day of your life every year, for not having your mom around to make memories with, to get advice from, to be a mom."
His words touched something inside, something she'd tried to ignore all day. She buried her face in his chest. And she cried.
Castle tightened his arms around her, holding her as close as he could. "I'm here, baby," he whispered, wishing for the millionth time that day that he could take her pain away. "I'll always be here."
Several minutes went by until she was able to control her tears. "Thank you," she told him softly.
It was his turn to look confused. "What for?"
She lightly brushed a fingertip across his cheek. "For being you, for being the best husband I could ask for, for loving me."
"And I do love you, Kate. So very much."
"And I love you, Rick Castle. More than I ever thought possible."
He pressed his lips to hers in a sweet, gentle kiss. When they pulled apart, he pulled her against him once again, feeling her truly relax in his arms for the first time that night. They continued to sway to the music. And he smiled.
