Her purrs haunted him. He heard them in his sleep and whenever he closed his eyes. He heard her in the dark of the night, though the only cat present was a scraggly stray whom he knew she would eventually find, take in, and love as he longed for her to love him. Her wonderfully lusty and deep purrs were deafening at the zoo, though the cat they were coming from never showed.
They surrounded him on his nightly missions and warned him more than once, by their abrupt pausing, that he was about to have a close call. They guided him through unfamiliar territory and delivered him home safe to his lonely Batcave the next morning. Although he did not understand how they did so, Batman had long come to believe Catwoman's purrs were more integral to his safety than any weapon he owned.
They went with him everywhere he traveled, from villains' hideouts to the other side of the world. Her purrs filled his dreams and his thoughts, and he longed, with a burning, aching, and endless desire, to make her purr once more. If ever he got that opportunity again, he swore, he'd never let her go.
